Asking for and checking receipts
can save money at fast food outlets
From Page 4
I think a while ago, I just got sick and tired of all the errors
and decided to pay a lot more attention when ordering and
paying.
When I dm ordering, I ask what options are included in the
advertised price of a meal. Because if you don't, and then ask
for some kind of drink/side item that is not included, they
won't tell you it is going to cost you extra, but just charge you
extra.
Same goes for sizing. If you don't specify "small," you get
large, (which is more pop than my whole family needs) There
are free refills at most places. Why would anybody even get a
large?
Oh, the receipt thing. Yeah, 1 freak a lot of teenage
employees out when I ask for one. You would think I had
asked for an eight track tape - it is equally as foreign to them.
Of course, they have to stare vacantly at me first, then call
the manager and explain that I want a receipt.
In the last month alone, I have been refunded four times,
totalling over $20 in mistakes rung in to the till incorrectly.
One place even charged a different amount than was
advertised on the board on the wall behind them, then told me
that since it was the way the machine had it programmed, that
was the right price!
If I have been charged incorrectly that many times, what do
you think is happening to everyone else? And why no receipts'?
What other industry gets away with that?
Do they not want us to see what we are being, charged?
Most people should have a pretty good idea of what their
purchase should come to. If it is way off, don't just shrug it off
as YOUR miscalculation - ask for a receipt.
And don't let them tell you that all those different amounts
on the receipt are the way the machine rings it in. They may
not ring a meal in as one price, but it should still add up to the
same amount that is advertised.
Stand your ground too; don't let them intimidate you into
thinking that it is a big deal for them to make a receipt. The
receipts are there, they just don't give them out unless you ask.
My family eats at fast food restaurants probably as much as
the next family does. When you are on the go as much as we
are, it somehow seems easier.
1 know it is expensive, but it seems like we as a culture have
adapted this style of "eat and go" wholeheartedly, and it just
has become part of our lives.
1 know it is usually always busy in those places, that is the
nature of their business -fast food. People are in a hurry, kids
are often loud, and things are definitely chaotic.
But that is no excuse. You should be able to get what you
ordered. And to make people feel intimidated by asking
questions about their order, well that is just plain wrong.
I think what maybe has me so upset about the quantity of
errors made in the industry, is not the errors themselves, (we
are all human after all, and I have certainly made errors on my
job). But, what seems to me to be an attitude on the part of the
fast food industry that they almost seem to count on people not
mentioning the error -I really hope that is not the case.
Because if it is, what industry is next?

Voters should be careful what they
wish for this election, says reader
From Page 4
fired from cabinet and obstructed at every move. (Paul Martin).
Now Canadians are as angry with the Liberal party as they
were with the Conservatives 10 years ago. And, where is
Chretien? Where is the creator of this anger, this distrust?
He has stepped aside, his timing is perfect again. He created
this cauldron of hate and has managed to dodge the bullet.
Chretien has moved on unscathed with a self -granted generous
pension and left Paul Martin and the Liberal candidates in this
election to bear the brunt of the voters' wrath.
Why punish Martin and other Liberal candidates for
decisions made by their old boss? Why jump out of the frying
pan into the fire? Why not let Paul Martin clean up the mess
left by Jean Chretien?
How can you possibly trust a Conservative government
dominated by Reform? Do you want the Conservatives to "fix"
Canada the same as they "fixed" Ontario Hydro'?
There is an old axiom that voters determined to punish the
Liberals might bear in mind. Be careful what you wish for; you
might get it.
Sincerely,
Gordon Hill

Skateboarders should respect monument
To the Editor,
It has been brought to my attention that some local skate
boarders are using the monument in Victoria Park to
practice their skills.
It saddens me that these young people have little or no
respect for this special place. It seems they think nothing
of using public park benches and picnic tables also.
I realize we need a skate board park but until such an
area is in place, perhaps they could he a little more
respectful of where they skateboard.
Thank you,

Habitat group works towards incorporation
The Habitat for Humanity
Huron County steering
committee is in the process of
becoming incorporated and
obtaining a charitable
registration number.
The steering committee is
meeting twice each month
towards their goal of setting
up an official board of
directors and committee
structure.
"We want the public to be
aware that there is a very
active committee that is
working hard to bring the
Habitat concept to Huron
County,' explains Paul Dyck
of Clinton, steering conuninee
chair.
"We will be active in
putting out information to, the
local newspapers and we are
in the process of having
brochures produced. We are
actively seeking people to
serve on various committees;

has been together through

"We have enjoyed together
weddings, anniversarys and
births. And we have cried
together at the passing of
loved ones and friends," said
Jan DelVecchio.
The youngest member Kim
Steep, 14, says the group is
just really fun to be a part of.
"Yah, it's really great. I
encourage everyone to come
out. It doesn't matter your
age and if you like to sing
come on out," said Steep.
For Whitmore the group is
best summed up as a family.
"There's just such a family

Darene Roma Yavorsky of

Hensall recently designed an
informational brochure for the
local Habitat group.
In addition, Bruce
Robertson has headed up an
active group from Wingham
that is planning to promote
public awareness by
participating in the town's
homecoming parade on July
3.
Bill Gulutzen of Westcast
Industries has agreed to be the
newest member of the
steering committee.
Incorporation papers for the
fledgling group are now being
processed and the group
hopes to have its charitable
registration number in place
within the next two months.
Bylaws have to be written
and approved that will outline
the • board structure and
governance of the group. The
goal is to establish a solid,
long term organization that
will impact housing needs in
Huron County for many
years.
"We have to establish a
solid base on which to build,"
said Paul Dyck. "As much as
we'd like to start building a
house tomorrow, we have to
make sure we have an
effective organization in place
that is here for the long run."
The Kinsmen Club of
Hensall made a donation of
$1500. In addition, a donation
was received from the United
Church in the Dashwood -
Zurich charge.
A database is also in place
for people who have
contacted Habitat at previous
public meetings held at
Hensall United Church.
Everyone who signed in at the
meetings or who called will
eventually be contacted to
assess their level of interest
and expertise.
"We don't just need skilled
trades," explained Dyck. "We
need people with a wide
variety of skills, talents and
commitment to our purpose."
