"But I'm still waiting to hear from the Conservatives in the news and see what they have on the agenda. Warner said he misses the days when elections would turn the party in power around each time. "It's a good sign if we get a good healthy Conservative vote and a little renewal in our political system," said Warner. Bob O'Brien said he would not mind a Conservative government, but says no matter which party is elected, he still has to go to work the next day. "It doesn't make much difference to me who gets in," said O'Brien. Some said that the election commericals on confrontational and should be issue oriented. "It's kind of stupid just the way they personally attack each other. If your ideas are better, make us belive your ideas am better, not that theirs are worse," said Fisher. Quoted Td be awful careful I didn't vote for someone who made things worse,' -- John Turnbull TV are too Many people thought the issues were not being displayed in the campaigns. "I wish they wouldn't do as much backstabbing as they do and get on with what they can do instead of running each other down. I think that's ridiculous," said O'Brien. After the Liberals' recent sponsorship program scandal, some wonder if all governments are the same. "It strengthens my resolve that those things are part of the political system and I'm critical of them," said Warner. Huron -Bruce voter very aware of electoral process, says Craig From Pogo 1 Newry Road, east of Brussels in Huron County and for the satellite returning office is at the Holyrood Centre in Bruce County. "There's not a steady stream of voters but it's a growing opportunity to vote at the returning office if you are planning to be away for Election Day or just want to get it over with," says Craig. Voter participation in Huron -Bruce is usually higher than other parts of the province and averages around 60 per cent. "The Huron -Bruce elector is very aware of the process and wants to participate," he says. Mobile polls for nursing homes, which travel from. Southampton to Exeter on Election Day help to reach seniors who otherwise not get to the palls. And, for the first time this year, the returning office went into local high schools to determine which new voters turned 18 in time to vote in the federal election. A total of 225 first-time voters were added to the list. "We've never taken that step before but we're hoping to get as many young voters as possible. We want to ensure we reach voters of all ages," says Craig. Craig encourages voters to look at their notice of the polling station they vote at and make sure the information is correct. But, taking identification with a signature and address to the polls will ensure your opportunity to vote, no matter what poll you attend. "We hope they'll take a look at the card they got in the mail and make sure they're voting at the right place," he says. Advance polls also start next week. For more information, call the Returning Office at 887- 8905 or 887-8901. All -candidates' issues include health care, military spending and the environment By Matt Sherrie Goderich Signal -Star Editor Huron -Bruce voters got their first chance to listen as federal candidates debated the issues on Monday in Goderich during the first of five all -candidate meetings. Health care, military spending, university tuition costs and the environment were just some of the questions asked of candidates Barb Fisher (Conservative), Dave Joslin (Christian Heritage), Grant Robertson (New Democrats), Glen Smith.(Marijuana), incumbent Paul Steckle (Liberal) and Dave Vasey (Green). Fisher used her opening statement to outline the Conservative Party of Canada platform including plans to reduce the federal tax rate for middle-income families by more than 25 per cent and the introduction of a new $2,000 per child deduction to reduce the tax burden for families with children under the age of 16. Fisher said her party would also ensure stable, long-term funding and improved access to drugs and natural health food products along with improved homecare services for seniors and the disabled. "Canadians are fast approaching an election that will shape Canada's future," Fisher said. "It is time to choose between the same Team Vincent's Riding Lawn Mower & Garden Tractor SPRING SERVICE SPECIAL Includes: • 10 pt. inspection • Change oil & filters • Grease all bearings •Complete cleaning 4P9 9 5 Parts II Extra fr Lawn Mowers 7 point inspection 5495 99 Chain Saws 6 point inspection 399 s We Service All Makes & Models tWitataf FARM EQUIPMENT cab t Just North of Seaforth 527-0120 www.teamvincent.com government that you've had for the last 10 years or to choose change." Robertson echoed Fisher's call for change saying he wanted to retum to the kind of Canada he remembered as a child. "I want the kind of Canada back that 1 grew up in where my parents could work hard and even though we were of very modest means could send both of their children to university and where my grandparents could pass on their farm to their children with pride and hope for the future," Robertson said. "1 want a Canada back again where people matter and where government works for people. That's why I'm here. Stecklc, who was first elected in 1993, said he ran because he believed there were things that needed to be changed for the country. "I headed my first campaign with the slogan 'priority of thc people' and that has continued to be my motto," Steckle said. "My goal is to serve thc people of Huron -Bruce and since 1993 we have taken a country which was in virtual bankruptcy and we have taken it from that point where today in four years we have taken care of thc deficit and now we have had seven years of consecutive balanced budgets. "This country is much better off today than it was 10 years ago." Joslin blamed the federal Liberal party of the 1960s and 70s for the apparent fall of Canada and Christian worldview ideas. "We are no longer safe, we are no longer free - not when we spend 52 cents of every dollar we earn to the taxman - 0 and we are not tolerant with racial tension at an all-time high," Joslin said. "The Christian Heritage Party is the only political party in Canada that still holds to the morality and legal code that made this country great." Smith. who is making history as the first Marijuana Party of Canada candidate in Huron -Bruce, said his party is running 120 candidates across Canada and hopes to make a political statement about marijuana legalization. "We would like to see marijuana legal for a few reasons - profits for one with a price per pound on the street right now at $2,800 per pound." Smith said. "That's a huge cash crop and farmers could bc utilizing it. We could be growing it and we could be using that revenue and putting it towards health care." Vasey. a lifelong Huron - Bruce resident, said he would like to sec Canadians work to protect thc land, water and air for future generations. He highlighted some of his party's platform including promotion of preventative health and making those who pollute financially responsible for their actions. "Right now our waters are becoming poisoned. our air affects our health and our lands are eroding," Vasey said. "We have thc power to changc all this today." During the question and answer period candidates were quizzed about a number of issues including Canada's military. Fisher said the Conservatives would invest $7 pillion to help reverse Liberal cuts. She said the Conservatives would address the "horrible state" of Canada's military immediately. Robertson said the NDP would make sure there was adequate equipment for the military but insisted Canada should "make sure we are willing to bring the whole world with us" in order to ensure there is peace. Steckle said Canada continues to be at the table with the Americans when it comes to peacekeeping and other military operations through NATO and NORAD. He said over the last 35 years the priority of Canadians has not been the military. Joslin drew a few boos from the crowd when he suggested Canada might be better off if it were the 51st U.S. state since Canadians would then have the right to hear arms. Vasey said his party would invest in a rapid response and deployment team but ultimately would support the United Nations. "We wouldn't want to be the bully of thc world," Vasey said. On the issue of health care spending Robertson said the NDP would support a publicly -funded health care system and would "slam the door" on private health care. Vasey said the system is in "crisis" and needs a long-term outlook while Joslin said Canada -wide health care standardized funding was necessary. Fisher pointed to Roy Romanow and blamed thc Liberals for not acting on his report. Steckle said a meeting between the prime minister and provincial health ministers in July would go a long way in shaping funding for Canada's health care system. Smith said legalizing marijuana would generate millions of dollars that could be applied to health care funding. 6i MINI MART June 15 DVD Rental Best Price 1! 2 Main St, S. Seaforth 527-0071
