Local drivers say rising gas prices
being felt in their thinning wallets
Sy Jason Middleton
ExposltorStaff
The rising price of gas in
Ontario has taken many
drivers for a ride.
Gas station owners in
Seaforth say that they have
seen an increase in sales
since the price hike
because of out-of-town.
customers shopping for a
deal.
Seaforth prices have
generally been four cents
cheaper than
surrounding
communities.
Karen
Martin,
manager of
Seaforth
Shell, says
she has seen
a 20 per cent
increase in
sales.
"Our sales
have gone
up, which is
good for us,"
says Martin.
Since the
price
increased a
month ago
Martin has
seen drivers come from
Goderich, Clinton and
Mitchell to get cheap gas
.in Seaforth.
But drivers are starting
to feel the rising price in
their thinning wallets.
Joe Tanney, of Seaforth,
says that he spends close
to $200 a week in gas to
get to his job in St. Marys
in his 1982 Camaro.
Tunney says that gas
prices suck.
"I've got a old car with a
big motor so I can't go too
far with no gas."
For the past few weeks
Tunney has been walking
to stoles to do errands.
"I hope they go way
down so I can start driving
again," says Tunney.
In the past two weeks
Seaforth Shell has lost
$100 because of an
increase in the number of
people who drive away
from the pump with out
paying.
"When our gas prices
went up, our drive -sways
always increased," says
Martin.
According to Marc
Robinet,
part owner of
Archie's
Service
Centre,
drivers
should not
stress over
the high gas
prices.
"Get it
when you
need it and
don't worry
about it,"
says Robinet.
Robinet
explains that
customers
will just have
to adjust to
how much it
costs to fill your vehicle.
"You just have to do
some adjusting to get used
to how much the vehicles
are taking," says Robinet.
Wendy Wall, of Vanastra,
says the gas companies are
taking drivers for a ride.
"I think they bump the
prices all around to keep
people from getting too
angry all at one time," says
Wall.
She suggests that drivers
should protest against the
companies by only filling
up their car to the same

price each time.
"I think the gas
companies have to realize
if they can change the
price all over the place
they're making too much
money," says Wall.
According to Petro -
Canada's website, a
majority of "crude oil
prices are influenced by
changes in global supply
and demand and current
inventory levels."
Petro -Canada also says
that 43 per cent of the
price of gas is made up of
taxes, 37 per cent covers
crude oil costs, 17 per
cent are marketing and
refining cost, with only
three per cent as profit.
"There are a lot of taxes
on gas and it would be nice
to see them come down
and the oil companies not
make as much money."
says Robinet.

Seaforth-area farmer Bill
Wallace , said that while a lot
of the land locally was under
water a week ago, much of it
has drained away.
"There arc some soybeans
in (in the Seaforth arca) but
very few since people
haven't had a chance," said
Wallace.
"And, the time's
approaching for white and
coloured beans but you can't
get onto the land," he said.
Wallace said the endless
rain is not a good omen for
haying season since hay
needs three days of "good
sunshine" to dry it out before
harvesting.
"And, it's the time of year
for the first cut," he said.
