Staffs dance needs more dancers
to keep 4o -year tradition alive
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
For more than 40 years,
couples have been stepping
and swinging to the strains of
the fiddle and banjo at the
Staffa Hall the second Friday
of every month.
The dancers used to be
young, married couples
accompanied by young
children who would curl up
on coats under the table's to
sleep as their parents danced
on into the early morning
hours.
They're now seniors, some
with recently -replaced hips
and others with new partners
after their spouses have died,
who still love to dance to Old
Time music.
But, after a long, snowy
winter when the Friday night
dance had to be cancelled
more than once because of
had weather, organizers are
wondering if the 40 -year
tradition might have to end.

dance at the Staffa Hall.
with just 20 people here but
40 is our break-even point for
costs," says organizer Ivan
Norris, of Staffa, who's been
attending the local dance
with his wife since it began.
"The problem with that
dance is that it's all older
people going and we can't
get any young ones. It's
going to peter out
eventually," says Lou
Maloney, of Seaforth, who's
been going to the dance for
close to 20 years.
"We thought April's dance
was going to be the last but
there was a good enough
crowd to keep it going for
awhile. I hope it doesn't end
hut- everyone- is getting
older." he says.
The dance in May was also
successful with 40 people in
attendance and Norris is
planning one for June. He's
also hoping that after the
dances, which are not held
from July to September,
resume again in October.
attendance will allow the
dance to continue.
Harvey Clark, of Listowel,
who calls the square dances,
has been attending the Staffa
dance for close to 25 years.
"These things arc hard to
keep going because there's
not local people coming.
They're from St. Marys,
London, Stratford, Wingham
and Clinton and they like this
kind of music. But,, that
means they have to travel
through winter weather to get
here," says Clark.
Pearl James, of Seaforth,
has been involved in the
Staffa dance since 1964 when
she and her late husband
Philip (who died in 1998)
were a fcw of the organizers.
"I didn't know how to
dance before I met him He
came from a large family and
learned to dance in people's
homes when the uncles
taught the nieces and the
aunts taught the nephews,"
she remembers.
James says the. dances
began in t e 1 ' •;t s W . en it
seemed like Old Time music
might be usurped by Rock
and Roll.
"We started the dances to
get the music back again. In
the late 50s, it looked like it
could he history," she says.
"In 1964, Old Time music
wasn't as popular but I think
it's corning hack."
James said the sound of
fiddle music made her and
her husband Philip want to
dance.
"As soon as that fiddle
would start, Philip would be
up on the floor and dance
every dance," she says.
Along with waltzes and
polkas, regulars at the Staffa
dance do all the old dances
including the two-step, the
fox trot, the French minuet,
the seven -step, the Gay
Gordon and the Sarcasian
Circle.
"We have a video tape with
Philip and 1 doing 44
different dance steps. My
husband knew a number of
dances people have never
heard of. 1 like all of there
but you have to have a
partner who knows them."
says Jalnes.
But, she says she might be
forgetting them.
"Now I hear the tune and 1
wonder what steps go with it.
I don't think Old Time music
will disappear but you have
to ttav
dances," she says.
Doris Jeffrey, of Staffa,
remembers bringing her"
children, now aged 28 to 37,
to the Staffa dances.
"Sometimes, we'd dance
with our kids in our arms and
they'd learn to dance too.
When they were tired, they'd
sleep under the -tables. We
were a lot younger then." she
says.
- "There aren't young ones
bringing their children
anymore," adds Helen Fell,
of Mitchell. "I wish the
young local people would
come out to keep this dance
going."
John Goldsmith, of
Seaforth, has been attending
the Staffa dance for nine
years.
"They've got a good band
and I like a good fox trot or
two-step. It keeps you
exercising so you don't seize
up," he says.
Barb and Keith Fawcett. of
St. Marys brought their
granddaughters Alaina. 18
and Elizabeth. 16. to April's
Staffa dance.
"This is not really our kind
of music but it's fun." says
Alaina.
"I've never square danced
before and it was fun, but
confusing. I'd .like to conic
again with gramma and
grandpa." says Elizabeth.
