Teper's company, MacPherson Master Builders, wilitc
designed with wide halls to be able to accommodate
wheelchairs and walkers, levers on the doors instead of
handles, variable counter heights and wall
switches and outlets at convenient locations on
the walls.
The laundry rooms will be on the main floor
so that climbing stairs won't be necessary and
snow clearing, grass cutting and gardening
services will be provided for a monthly fee.
And, with one architect and one builder,
Teper points out how the architecturally -
planned development will blend together as a
community.
"In the longterm, the buildings will be
something to be proud of - they'll be an asset to
the area," he says.
The 248 homes will be built in phases of 40
to 50 homes at a time and will range in size
from 1,050 to 3,000 square feet.
A 16,000 -square -foot -recreation complex wil be the first
building to be erected this summer and will be the focal point
of the Bridges community.
It will include an indoor swimming pool with whirlpool and
sauna, a banquet, dining and community room, two outdoor
tennis courts, a deck with full barbecue facilities, men's and
women's locker rooms, a fitness and exercise room, a
billiards room, card rooms, a library, a health clinic and
doctor's office, a TV and home theatre, a virtual golf room,
an arts and crafts room and a woodworking shop.
"It's like a camp resort and you're on vacation for the rest
of your life," says Teper.
Of the 10 to 12 adult lifestyle communities in Ontario,
MacLean says there are only five or six of the Bridges'
calibre.

"Adult communities are a phenomena in the
States and it's coming to Canada. It's an area
of real estate that's not serviced very well,"
says Teper.
Since it's beinii built in the centre of the U-
shaped golf course, MacLean says the
development is safer than most subdivisions
built on golf courses.
"Typically, golf course developments have
fingers of fairways and homes and it's like
living on death row from the golf balls. But, it
will be almost impossible to be hit by a golf
ball (at Bridges)," he says.
The project began when Rod Doig, of the
Seaforth Golf Club and MacLean got together
and imagined how the land next to the golf
course would 'make a great retirement community."
"The Doigs have helped us bring the development to
fruition from the beginning," says Teper.
Part of the development which has already begun involves
eight existing holes being taken out of play and moved for a
"revamped and revitalized 18 holes" with complete irrigation
and a more picturesque course with the new holes through the
woods at the back of the existing golf course.
"Seaforth's is a very good golf course and the two (the
cou>'se and the development) make a natural fit," says
MacLean.

superintendent Marjatta
Longston accepted the top
job at a school board on
British Columbia's lower
mainland.
"We are very please for
Marjatta, but it will be a sad
time for us," said North
Huron trustee Colleen
Schenk, announcing
Longston's resignation
during a regular meeting,
Tuesday, May 11.
"We'd like to offer our
sincere congratulations and
wish you the best of luck."
In an interview, Longston
explained she received a
call from a corporate "head-
hunter," working on behalf
of School District 42
(Maple Ridge -- Pitt
Meadows) in southwestern
BC. She later travelled to
the area, just east of
Vancouver, for an interview.
Longston welcomed the
challenge presented by
running a school board, as
well as the prospect of
moving to an area known
for its natural beauty.
Longston's new job
begins Aug. 1, and she'll be
done at the Avon Maitland
board -- where her specific
responsibilities were
curriculum and assessment -
- on June 30.
"She has provided some
tremendous leadership in all
kinds of areas within the
board," explained chair
Meg Westley. "But she has
also built up an
exceptionally strong team
and I have great faith they
can follow in her footsteps."
Last year, director of
education Lorne Rachlis
and education
superintendent Bill Gerth
both left the Avon Maitland
board to take over as top
directors in Ottawa and
Waterloo, respectively. The
board also had to find a
replacement for former
education superintendent
Geoff Williams, who was
chosen to replace Rachlis.
