Grade 4 students have
spent the last month
travelling once a week to the
pool at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre for
swimming lessons. At top

Huron Hurricanes take 15 swimmers
to Etobicoke Team Champs meet
The Huron Hurricanes took
15 swimmers to the Division
3 Team Champs Swim Meet
at Etobicoke Olympium.
It was an exciting three-day
event which started with
warm-ups Friday, April 23
and ended with the 15 and
over girls' 200 freestyle relay
on Sunday, April 25 with
many highlights in between.
The Hurricanes entered
swimmers in 68 events and
achieved personal best times
in 59 of the events, resulting
in a showing of 87 per cent
personal best times.
The Huron Hurricanes team
was one of 40 teams from
around Ontario. Each team
had the opportunity of
selecting 20 athletes to attend
the weekend meet.
Individual highlights
included Hensall's Nick
Vaessens who swam in the
13-14 200 -metre individual
medley and cut an amazing 20
seconds off his recently
achieved seed time to finish
with a 3:53.35.
Bridget Livingston, of
Vanastra, bettered her seed
time in the 200 backstroke by
21 seconds.
Katelyn Riley, of Seaforth,
swam a fast 100 breaststroke.
Both Meaghan Livingston
and Nathanya Barnett earned
three personal best times.
Danielle Heinbuch and
Rebecca Melady had races
where they sliced nine
seconds off recent seed times;
Heinbuch in the 200 -metre
breaststroke and Melady in
the 200 -metre backstroke.
Joel Grace earned new
personal best times in his next
category of 13 to14 year old.
Valerie Otten had a strong
individual freestyle and flew
in the last leg of the freestyle
team relay.
Christy Hartmann earned
personal best times in four of
her races, for an overall gain
of 17 seconds over recent
seed times.
Sarah Vaessen had three
•
personal best times with a
total gain of 13 seconds on
r recent seed times.
Patrick Livingston had four
personal beat times including
the relay for a total gain of 13
seconds.
Individual results showed
the results of long hours of
practice in the pool and in
training.
Katelyn Riley, of Seaforth,
swimming in 10 and under
group had three great swims
making all personal best
times.
In the 50 backstroke Riley
swam it in 56:35.
She swam the 100
breaststroke in 2:24.44 cutting
six seconds off her old time.
Riley's final event was the
50 Butterfly with a time of
1:14.62.
Nickolas Vaessen of
Hensall finished with a
1:27.98 in the 100 -metre
freestyle. Vaessen had a
personal best time of 1:46.45
in the 100 metre backstroke.
Nickolas Vaessen achieved
a 2:06.60 in the 100 -metre
breaststroke. Vaessen cut an
amazing 20 seconds off his
time in the 200 -metre
individual medley to finish
with a time of 3:53.35.
Christy Hartman, of
Hensall, cut two seconds off
her seed time in the 100 -metre
freestyle to finish with a
personal best time of 1:15.69.
In the 100 -metre
backstroke, Hartman cut a fill
four seconds off to finish with
a 1:28.35.
Another great personal best
time was achieved by
Hartman in the 100 -metre
breaststroke where she sliced
five seconds off to make a
1:38.03.
In the 200 breaststroke
Hartman swam it six seconds
faster than her seed time to
finish with a personal best
time of 3:31.54.
Sarah Vaessen, of Hensall,
swam the 100 -metre freestyle
in 1:21.84.
Vaessen cut a full eight
seconds off her seed time in
the 100 -metre backstroke to
finish
with a 1:35.44.
In the 100 -metre
breaststroke Sarah Vaessen
swam it five seconds faster
than her seed time to end with
a personal best time of
1:45.79.
In the 200 -metre
breaststroke , Vaessen had
another personal best time of
3:47.33.
Bridget Livingston, of
Vanastra, swam in the 11-12
years old category and earned
personal best times.
In the 50 -metre freestyle
Bridget Livingston shaved
two seconds off to finish with
a time of 36.97.
In the 100 freestyle event,
Bridget Livingston swam it in
1:28.89. In the 100 -metre
backstroke, Bridget
Livingston cut four seconds
off her seed time to finish
with a time of 1:36.39.
In the 100 breaststroke she
had another personal best time
of 1:48.28.
In the 200 backstroke
Bridget had a personal time
of 3:22.40, a full 21 seconds
faster than her seed time.
Meaghan Livingston, 11
years old, of Vanastra,
finished her 100 -metre
freestyle with a 1:37.16.
In the 100 metre backstroke
Meaghan had a final time of
1:54.82.
In the 100 -metre
breaststroke, she cut a total of
seven seconds off her seed
time to earn a personal best of
with a 1:53.17.
Meaghan had two more
personal best times; one in the
200 breaststroke event where
she bettered her time by eight
seconds to finish with a
4:09.39 and another in the 100
butterfly where she finished
with a 2:04.92.
Patrick Livingston, of
Vanastra, finished the 50
metres of freestyle in 30.37.
In the 100 -metre freestyle
he had a personal best time of
1:10.17 shaving three seconds
off his seed time.
I the 100 -metre backstroke
iiairick cut a full -five seconds
off his seed time to finish with
a 1:22.30.
In the 10b -metre
breaststroke, he finished with
a time of 1:30.78. In the 200 -
metre backstroke, Livingston
shaved four seconds off and
finished with a personal best
time of 3:02.69.
On Saturday, the final event
of the day in the 11-12 year
old category was a great team
activity with four girls
swimming a 200 -metre
freestyle relay.
Emily Walraven swam the
opening 50 metres, followed
by Katelyn Riley on the
second leg.• Meaghan
Livingston swam the next 50
metres and Bridget was the
anchor for the last 50 metres.
Their final time was a two
second improvement on the
seed time finishing in 2:49.58.
