Internationally -renowned Amabile
choir brings male voices to town
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
After singing with the
Amabile Boys' Choir, of
London, Ont., for seven
years, Don Sills is bringing
the internationally; renowned
group to Seaforth on May 14.
While it's likely his last
year with the boys' and
young men's chorus, Sills
wants to expose the town and
potential new members to the
sound of a male chorus,
something he says is a rare
sound in today's world.
"As a future music
educator, I want to instill the
sound of men's singing
because other than pop
music, it's a sound the ear is
not used to hearing since men
are discouraged from
singing," he says.
"I want to do what I can to
get boys to sing because
there's such a need for an
outlet besides hockey and
soccer. Sports are very
important, but they're not
everything," he says.
The Amabile group, which
is travelling to the Czech
Republic from July 4 to 17 to
host an international men's
and boys' music festival, also
won a CBC choral youth
competition this year.
Over the past several years,
the group has also travelled
throughout Canada, the U.S.,
the Caribbean and Europe to
music festivals.
Sills was invited to join the
group by his adjudicator at
the Stratford Music Festival,
who was also director of
Amabile.
Sills says singing choral
music is a character building
experience with the young
men helping out the boys.
The age range in the choir is
12 to 24.
"The idea is to build a

world full of gentle men
through music, softening the
heart through music," he
says.
Sills says Amabile's four-
part harmony is not a
barbershop style but often
described as a "velvet
sound." The choir sings
everything from classical to
folk to sacred music to
international music.
"It's exceptionally high
calibre singing. It would be a
concert that would provide
music that people in town
would never have heard
before," he says.

costs of the Amabile visit,
which will include concerts
at three schools - Elma Public
School, Seaforth Public
School and St. James School
- during the day and at St.
James Catholic Church in
Seaforth in the evening.
While a smaller group of
singers aged 19 to 29 called
Primus, will be singing
during the day, the full choir
will be singing at the evening

Forget having a thirst for knowledge.
The youth group at the First Presbyterian
Church recently went hungry for a cause and
raised $1004 for the Seaforth and area
Foodgrains Bank.
The 10 participants in the 30 -Hour Famine
each had to raise at least $25 in order to
participate.
"I think it's good because it goes to help
people who don't have food," said youth
group member Tim Robinson.
The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a
Christian -based charitable organization that
distributes cash, grain and other agricultural
commodities to the world's hungry.
"It will be matched four to one by the
Government's Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) project which
will in turn will turn to four times the money
that is raised through the project right here,"
said Jim Murray Chair of the Seaforth and
area Foodgrains Bank.
The money will be donated to the Seaforth
and area Foodgrains Bank who will use it to
buy seed to plant its 11 th crop. Proceeds from
the sale of the crop will go to the Canadian
Foodgrains Bank.
The 10 youth and their leader Dale Ann
McKichan stopped eating at 12:30 p.m.on
Friday and could not cat anything except
jello, juice and water until 6:30 pm on
Saturday finishing up with a pizza dinner.
On Friday night the youth group went
swimming, played games and two videos
about the Foodgrains project.
Members of the First Presbyterian Church youth group raised $1004 for the Seaforth and area
