John Gould is Northside United Church's new minister By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff After one year of not having a full time minister the congregation at Northside United Church can rejoice with the arrival of their new minister, Rev. John Gould. Gould moved to Seaforth at the beginning of the month from Sarnia where he pastored at the same church for 13 years. He credits the church's organization and programs for the reason he took the job. "I was certainly impressed by the committee of the church and the direction that they had been going in and what they wanted to do," said Gould. Along with the committee, Gould hopes to attract younger people to church with Christian rock in the services. He said the reason he left his church in Sarnia is because, "13 years is long enough. I think probably not a whole lot more was going to happen there." This is Gould's 27th year being involved in ministry. He got a bachelor of arts at Carlton University, a business diploma at Lambton College and studied theology at Queen's University. He is currently annotating the diary of a Canadian nurse who served in Russia during the Second World War. Gould%has written several other books include a history of Christmas carols. Gould has been to 90 countries around the world. He hopes to set up two flag poles in front of the manse on Goderich Street West and fly some of the flags he's collected on his travels. "I've been here for a week and I'm still in a state of disarray. I expect to be for another months so I can't find a lot." Packed away in the moving boxes are his collections of Chinese artifacts and a model train he hopes to set up in the basement of the manse. Gould both at Rev. John Gould is the minister at Winthrop and Northside Cavan United in United in Seaforth. Parking lot behind town 4, hall will be new skate park p:ti From Page 1 too if it's too far to walk,"' he said. Seili repeated arguments that a downtown location is the one preferred by the skateboarders and one that he thinks will be safest. "If it's in the open, there's no damage but if it's in the middle of nowhere, there's damage and graffiti," he said, adding that the Huron OPP office in town hall will also help. "Give the kids a chance. If it doesn't work, we can always take it away," added McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure. When Maloney asked ab t t insurance, Seili responded that a skate a a ar r park poses the same risk as any other m . icipal property. "We're on the hook if the 're going down the sidewalk on Main Street and break their leg," said Seili. Skate park organizers eager to begin building ramus and raisin funds By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor John Ryan is eager to take his tape measure to the old water tower site behind Seaforth's town hall to measure the • dimensions of a new skateboard park for the town. "I'm happy that it's a go ahead. Once council made their move, it went quickly and we really appreciate that," said Ryan in response to news that Huron East council decided on a site for the park last Tuesday. Ryan and his wife Susie approached council more than a year ago about building a skate park in downtown Seaforth. Ryan said he hopes to see at least a cement pad in place by the end of the summer with the park evolving and adding ramps and bars as the funding can be raised. "We'll need to meet with the kids and their parents and figure out the design and costs and then see the town, the Seaforth trust and local business people might be willing to contribute," he said. "Everything can start now that we have a site. We couldn't ask for money before we had a spot," said Ryan. Ryan is hoping anyone with interest in helping organize or build the skateboard park will join the effort. "There may be others who've had more experience organizing skate parks than. we have. This is our first one. We've hoping it can come together relatively quickly," he said. "If it's just Susie and me on the end of a shovel mixing cement, it could take awhile but I'm sure there'll he a lot of help," he says. He says the site behind town hall will be big enough for a skate park. "The structures can be adaptable to any setting. Currently, all they have now is the width of a sidewalk," he says. Interior of car destroyed by fire The interior of a car, Huron OPP parked behind the Shell gas station in Seaforth, was destroyed by fire after its contents were stolen on May 5, reports the Huron OPP.
