HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2004-05-05, Page 7Maplewood celebrates April with music, worship and bingo The month of April got off to a great start at Maplewood Manor with a lively afternoon of music with the Staffa Old Tyme band. Members of the band included Ivan Norris, John Zettel, Andrew Patrick, Jim Delaney, Elgin Nott and Dolly McQuaid. Our weekly visits with "Buffy" the St. John's Ambulance therapy dog, and her owner, George Jamieson, continue to be enjoyed by our residents. Horticulture Club with Eleanor Horst was busy as Maplewood Manor residents planted marigold and sunflower seeds. Everyone was amazed at how fast they grew. Joyce Lammerant visited and led in a hymn sing with residents. Father Lance, Pastor Hildebrand, Rev. Atkins and Rev. McCarthy led in worship service during the Easter season. Easter morning residents awoke to find that the Easter bunny had paid a visit to them. Residents also enjoyed a delicious Easter dinner of ham and scalloped potatoes. Special hand treatments and polished nails were the order of the day when Margaret Whitmore came for her monthly manicure session. Residents enjoyed piano music played by Marjory Papple and Bill Gibson. A great way to spend an afternoon. Crokinole and bingo are popular activities that everyone looks forward to with Charlie and Peggy Perkins, Helen MacKenzie, Beth Pryce, Velma Preszcator, Delphine Dolmage, June Martene and Betty Hulley. Crafts with Barbara Scott and Betty Harris is always fun and exciting making items for our bazaar. The month ended with a special volunteer appreciation dinner for those who so willingly participate in our activity program. We are truly thankful for the caring and dedication of this wonderful group of people. Residents plan Community Yard Sale as Queensway creates family council Queensway's first Family Council meeting was held Thursday, April 29 facilitated by Maggie Deveau, social worker. Maggie expressed her appreciation to those present for their interest and participation. Family members and friends are welcome to join the council at any time and can call Queensway for further information. Maggie can be reached at Queensway each Thursday. The Lakeview Conservative Mennonite Queensway Nursing Home Singers visited Tuesday night to sing Gospel music for residents. All those in attendance stated they enjoyed the music and especially the participation of all the small children. Following the program refreshments and visiting took place. Paula Townsend and her Maltese therapy dog, "Popcorn" were welcomed back from Florida on Wednesday morning by enthusiastic residents who have been missing them throughout the long winter. Popcorn's wagging tail and loving personality make him a popular visitor. The Rev. Marilyn Carter of Thamesroad. Elimville churches led worship Tuesday afternoon with Belva Fuss as volunteer pianist, and Marg Cole and Pastor Elly Van Bergen assisting residents. Thursday afternoon baking group met and decided to mix up a batch of fresh raisin scones to be served at the Family Council meeting. Friday morning, the Residents' Council met to discuss the many upcoming events in May, especially our participation in the Henll Community Yard Sale, Saturday, May 29. We plan to have a barbecued food booth again this year and we hope to have many good quality items at our yard sale tables. "Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging" workshops planned for 1ocaseniors The Huron County Health•unit is offering three "Healthy Eating for Healthy Aging" workshop for adults living independently in Huron County. Kayla Glynn, registered dietitian and public health nutritionist with the health unit will provide information on healthy eating and recommended dietary changes. The Community Food Advisors will provide healthy food demonstrations. To attend, you must register in advance by calling the Health Unit. In Huron County, the Health Unit is working with Town and Country Support Services, the Huron Community Food Advisors, and Housing Services to provide these valuable workshops. Workshops are being offered across the county. On May 12 in Clinton, May 19 in Wingham and June 2 in Exeter.
