CHSS walkathon donating profits
to the Huron United Way
To the Editor,
My name is Nicole Moore. Currently I am involved with
the 2004 CHSS Walkathon. This year the committee has
decided to donate the profits of the walkathon to the Huron
United Way.
The United Way is an organization which helps and
supports many other charities in the county and all over
Ontario. Some include The Boys and Girls Club, The
Women's Shelter Second Stage Housing and Counselling
Service of Huron as well as groups such as Epilepsy Huron -
Perth -Bruce.
Year after year they continue to help the community by
funding these very important agencies. They also hold an
annual "Day of Caring" event which encourages youth to
help the community by cleaning up and raking yards after
the winter season.
Another large project the United Way conducts is the
"Coats for Kids" campaign. Huron County residents can
donate outgrown or unused winter coats and this in turn
allows the less fortunate people of this county to have
something warm to wear through the winter months.
Organizations such as these are vital in our community, so
it is very important to support them in any way possible.
Redwalk '04 will begin the morning of Tuesday, May 18,
at CHSS, where the students will then make their way
through a 15.7 km. trek to the Stanley Community Complex
west of Varna.
Students will be supplied with lunch and will then enjoy an
afternoon full of fun, games and activities.
By supporting Central Huron through Redwalk '04, you
will also be supporting the people surrounding you and your
own community. Please pledge generously.
If you wish to pledge, please contact a Central Huron
student or contact the school by calling 482-3471.
Remember that by supporting Redwalk '04, you will also be
contributing a great amount to the community of Huron
County.

War Amps brings safety message to kids
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
The War Amps teamed up
with the Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) and brought an
important message to 2,000
local students last week.
The students in Grades 2 to
8 at 12 schools were told the
importance of being safe
when playing.
"We're coming out here to
say go out have fun with
your friends but do it safely
because there are so many
children who get hurt in
accidents and lose their arms,
legs or worse, their lives,"
said Playsafe safety events
coordinator Kelly Rankin at
St. Columban School
Tuesday afternoon.
Rankin, a 22 -year-old
amputee, was born without
her right arm below the
elbow.
When she was five months
old her parents.: enrolled her
in the Child Amputee
Program (CHAMP) a
program for children missing
limbs.
"The reason I'm here today
is the CHAMP program is
also for children that have
lost limbs in accidents.
Accidents that should not
have happened," said
Rankin.
War Amps created the
Playsafe program after
seeing children who lost
limbs in preventable
accidents started enrolling in
the CHAMP program.

Kelly Rankin, a safety events coordinator with War Amps, and
OPP community service officer Const. Don Shropshall talked
to 2,000 students last week about the importance of playing
safe. Rankin explained to the students that accidents are
avoidable if you know about hidden dangers.
OPP community service
officer Const. Don
Shropshall warned students
of the "consequences that
can happen when we don't
take that extra second to
think about our safety and the
safety of the people around
us."
During the one hour
presentation, the students
were shown a video called
"Spot the Danger" featuring
the stories of 14 CHAMPs
and how they lost their limbs.
Rankin challenged teachers
and students to go on a
Safety Walk and point out
possible dangers at home or
in play areas.
"The safety walk is so
important because it prevents
accidents and that's why I'm
here," said Rankin.

12 children riding hikes have
been hit by cars and four
young people have been
killed because of drinking
and driving. All of them were
Meat the Needs program
asking for more donations
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
Despite .strong initial support the
Donate a Cow program is asking local
farmers for more donations.
Launched in December by the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
(HCFA) and Huron County Dairy
Producers, Meat the Needs of Huron
provides free ground beef to county
food banks to help feed the needy.
"It seems the interest is kind of
slacking from what it was in December
or January. The price of `cows is up a
bit. Maybe they aren't as willing (to
donate)," said John Klaver, of Kippen,
who along with Bill Wallace, or RR4
Seaforth, is leading the program on
behalf of thc HCFA' and dairy
producers.
In December the price per head of
cattle was between $5.0 to $100. Since
then, cow prices have risen to $200.
This year, 17 cows have been donated
but Klaver is optimistic more cows will
be donated.
"Our hope was that farmers would
stick one (cow) out a year," said Klaver.
The program is also looking for
support from packers to help process the
animals. "We're
always looking for sponsorship on the
processing end of it," said Klaver.
To donate to thc program, contact
Wallace at 522-0804 or Klaver at 263-
5048.
