At the hop
St. James students performed a 1950s operetta called At The Hop yesterday.
At top, an ensemble performs a song called Playing With Fire while at left,
Matt Nigh and Cassidy Flanagan dance the twist. Above, Brittany Flanagan
tries to convince her parents, played by Brad McLaughlin and Stacey Van
Miltenberg, how difficult it is to be a teenager.
Board 45 more parking spaces
Chalk Street resident
Dorothy Drager said during a
phone interview that
something has to be done
about the traffic congestion
on her street.
"When you can't get in
and out of your driveway,
there's a problem," she said.
Drager said that even when
her driveway is not blocked
there are so many cars
parked on the street that it's
hard to see if anyone is
coming while backing out of
the driveway.
"You take your life in your
hands," she said.
Avon Maitland facilities
administrator Mike Rau said
during a phone interview that
the hoard is planning to
alleviate the parking
problems by building 45
additional parking spaces on
the cast side of the tennis
courts this summer when a
new 6,000 -square -foot
maintenance building is
erected to house nine
maintenance staff members

in the future," he said.
Mayor Joe Seili told
Williamson he could
sympathize with the daycare.
"I can see the predicament
you were in. You got blasted
both ways," he said.
As well as attending the
council meeting, Williamson
sent a letter to council which
outlined the daycare's plans
to move the shed and
garbage bin, which were
placed at the front of the
building because the ground
was too soft to move them to
their intended locations.
"We understand that the
building (storage shed)
cannot stay where it is
presently located, however,
we would ask for some
patience again due to the
weather and the weather
alone," said his letter.
Williamson added that the
steel siding at the daycare
centre is no different than the
Agriplex, located down the
street.
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven
asked if parking bylaws are
being followed on Chalk
Street but Seili responded
that the municipality has no
one to enforce traffic bylaws.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said that at a
recent meeting between
Huron East and school board
staff, Avon Maitland
administrators knew that
parking was creating
problems on Chalk Street.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler
said he hoped those visiting
the board office or school
could have some respect for
the residents of the street.
"They should have enough
common sense and respect
that they don't park in front
of someone's driveway," he
said.
Beaven agreed with the
residents' letter that
complained that two
crosswalks, planned for the
Franklin Street intersection
and in front of the fenced
entrance at the north end of
the school, were
unnecessary.
But, Public Works
Coordinator John Forrest
said the two crosswalks.
located 100 feet apart, don't
cause a problem.
"I've watched it and it
works fine. And, it's only for
10 minutes every morning
and afternoon," he said.
"I don't want to be around
if someone's kid gets hit. If
that's what the school wants,
that's what I want," added
Brussels Coun. David
Blaney.
currently working in Clinton
and Stratford.
"The complaints in the
neighbourhood prompted the
new parking lot." he said
Monday.
Steve Howe, media
relations officer with the
Avon Maitland school hoard,
said that between the hoard
office and Seaforth Public
School, less than 10
complaints have been
received about parking on
Chalk Street.
"In all cases, we
immediately sought out the
owner and had the car moved
in just a few minutes," he
said. "There were never
prolonged delays."
Howe said he hopes the
new parking lot, which is
expected to he tendered May
17 with a' completion date of
Aug. 15, will solve the
congestion, which he said is
particularly had on
Wednesdays when the board
office hosts the most
workshops.
