THE HURON EXPOSITOR, APRIL 21, 2004-17
Seaforth marching band leads the way down Disney's
Main Street during recent trip to the Florida coast
Hurricane season came two months early
for the Florida coast as members of the
Seaforth and District All Girls Marching
Band landed in the southern state during a
March Break performing tour.
Band members — from across Huron
County — returned from Florida on March 20
tanned and full of life-long experiences.
During their week-long tour the band
performed at Busch Gardens, Walt Disney
World's Magic Kingdom and prior to a
Toronto Blue Jays spring training game in
Dunedin.
Band director Charlie Kalbfleisch said the
trip was an excellent experience for the band.
"This was a great plus for us," Kalbfleisch
said. "The different things we did were
incredible."
The band opened up the March Break trip
with a performance on March 13 in the
courtyard at Busch Gardens.
Goderich resident Cassandra Irvin began
the day by singing the Canadian national
anthem and the band followed with a number
of routines featuring the Beatles, Beach Boys
and Mambo Number Five.
The band finished their performance with
Irvin's rendition of the American national
anthem.
The highlight performance came on March
14 when the band led three American bands
down Main Street at Disney's Magic
Kingdom.
"It was a great honour to lead these other
three American bands through Magic
Kingdom," Kalbfleisch said.
The final performance for the band came
on March 18 when they were given the
opportunity to perform prior to Toronto's
pre -season game.
The band took up shop behind second base
and performed for 20 minutes to the delight
of the 6,000 Jays fans.
Once again Irvin sang the. American
national anthem and also cranked out the
popular seventh inning stretch classic, "Take
Me Out to the Ball Game."
Kalbfleisch said the response from the fans
was great.
"People in the crowd cheered like crazy,"
he said. "It was amazing."
Irvin said she wasn't nervous despite
having a few technical problems.
"When I was singing the national anthem
the microphone wasn't working," she said.
"So I think only the first row heard me."
A representative for the Blue Jays then
asked Irvin to sing during the seventh inning
stretch which she readily agreed to do.
"I didn't really know the words to the song
but there were people from Toronto in the
row near me so they helped me out," Irvin
said.
The 65 band members and their 12
chaperones were able to slip in some fun -
time during the week including stops at
MGM Park and a National Hockey League
game featuring the Tampa Bay Lightning.
As Kalbfleisch returned to the frigid
Ontario weather he's gearing up for
recruitment and more parades.
"During the second week of April we start
recruiting for the band," he said. "We are
always encouraging new members to come
The Seaforth and District All -Girls Marching Bard
out."
The band will also be practicing over the
next few weeks for the Clinton Fair and
Sound of Music Festival in Burlington.
The band also hopes to play next year in
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and at the
2006 Calgary Stampede in Alberta.
Kalbfleisch said it would be a tough go of
it due to the end of Trillium funding from the
province.
The band accepts donations from service
clubs, municipalities and organizations.
For more information regarding donations
or joining the band call Sharon Thompson at
482-7551, Penny Breen at 524-9306 or
Kalbfleisch at 565-2244.
