First annual Drownin' Dog canoe rally
attracts 45 teams to Bayfield River
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
When Brett Lee bought a
house in Egmondville
almost four miles down the
Bayfield River from his
friend Brian Melady's place,
the two almost immediately
began talking about
organizing a canoe rally
between their houses.
The Brett to Brian's
Drownin' Dog canoe rally,
held Good Friday with 45
teams participating, was the
result.
"There were a lot of wet
drowning dogs since a
quarter to a half of the
people fell in or got wet but
they all had a fantastic
timd," said Melady.
"We're already talking
about what we'll do
differently next year. I think
there'll be a lot of
disappointed people out
there if we don't do it
again," he said.
While the rally was
organized on a break-even
basis just for the fun of the
participants, Melady and
Lee ended up making
$1,000, which was donated
to local groups and causes,
including $400 to the
Seaforth Curling Club, $400
to the Seaforth Legion and
$200 to Bill Price's
Campout for Cancer
campaign.

promoted for its first year
through word of mouth
because the organizers were
afraid of attracting too many
participants.
"I've only been here a
year and we've congested up
the whole road. But some of
the neighbours are all
excited and want to join in
next year," said Lee.
The rally was also non-
competitive and organized as
a poker rally with canoeists
stopping along the route to
pick up five Easter eggs
containing playing cards.
A stop was also planned
along the river for lunch
with a supper planned at the
end of the day.
"It's probably three and a
half hours of canoeing but it
will be a five to six -hour run
with all the socializing," said
Melady.
If the number of
participants doubles or even
triples, as expected, next
year, Melady said he and
Lee might have to ask local
service clubs if they want to
get involved next year.

Farmerettes come
fourth at Canadian
national broomball
championships
By Susan Hund.rtmark
Exposftor Editor
While they came fourth
in the recent Canadian
national broomball
championships, the
Farmerettes
(formerly of
Seaforth)
won their
own personal
triumph by
beating the
Quebec
Huskies.
"That was
just the best.
That was the
highlight of
t h e
tournament,"
said Teresa
Finlayson,
who along
with her
daughters
Mary and
Jessica, are the three
Seaforth members of the
elite women's broomball
team.
While the Farmerettes
have competed four times
in the national
competition, they were
beaten twice for gold by
the Quebec Huskies both
in 1999 and 2002.
"Eliminating them from
the medal round was our
moment of greatness," she
said.
The Farmerettes ended
up in the medal round
themselves this year but
were beaten both by
Alberta 2-1 and by the
other Ontario team,
McMillan, in the bronze
medal game.

"It was a
good week
and we
played very
well. During
the last six
minutes of
the game
against
Alberta,
Alberta
couldn't get
the ball out
of their end
and we/hied
everything
but we
couldn't get
it in the
goal," said
Finlayson.
During the national
tournament, the
Farmerettes beat
Saskatchewan 2-0, Quebec
2-0, New Brunswick 4-0
and Manitoba 1-0.
Jessica Finlayson was
named the most valuable
player for the Farmerettes
team during the
tournament.
"It was very exciting for
both Jessica and Mary as
their first nationals. For
mc, it's my fourth, but
probably my last," said
Teresa.
