were a lot of young people in
the area but no park for them
to play in and any sports
teams that had formed were
"pretty much on their own."
Bruxer said a meeting was
called to gauge the
community's interest in
building a local park.
"It was so well attended
that it was obvious that there
was interest," he said.
The first project was a
backstop so kids could play
baseball. Bruxer said the
original backstop was built
using old telephone poles on
St. Patrick church's property
across from where the
current park lies.
The new association began
to organize house leagues
and provided a trophy for the
winners of the annual end of
summer playoff tournament.
With the popularity of the
association's work growing,
Bruxer said it was decided
that they should purchase
some land to develop a full
park.
Three locations were
identified but all three fell
through. Then in September
of 1969 the association made
an offer -of $4,000 for the
land where the park
currently sits.
Money was raised with a
waikathon, which featured
145 sponsored walkers.
"The whole community
responded," Bruxer said. "It
was very successful."
The waikathon succeeded
in raising enough money for
the land with a small balance
left over.
That wasn't the end of the
hard work though. according
to Bruxer.
"The land was nothing
better than sheep grazing
land," he said. "It was
rough."
Eventually though the park
began to take shape and ball
diamond were build, along
with a small service
building, fences and new
backstop.
Later on a. second ball
diamond was added, along
with lights.
"Even then it was barely
adequate," Bruxer said.
"They were busy every
night."
With the park still a
popular community
gathering -place to this day,
Bruxer said the original
members of the association
remain proud of their
accomplishments.
"There is a park where
once there was nothing," he
said. "We had a lot of fun."
