Dublin Lions honour Don
MacRae's exceptional work
The Dublin Lions Club honoured one of
their own in a surprise presentation on April
6.
Don MacRae, the Lions Zone Chairman,
was presented with the Helen Keller
Fellowship award, which is given to
individuals who have made longstanding
contributions to their club and communities.
Winners are distinguished as exceptionally
hard workers.
Lions secretary Ernie Fleming said
MacRae has been an active member in the
community for many years.
"He has given light in the darkness, warm
in the cold, compassion in the hurt and
humanity in the suffering," Fleming said of
MacRae. "He is living his creed to serve
others."
Fleming added that MacRae has also had
perfect attendance since joining the Lions on
April 10, 1975 and he has served in
numerous capacities including president and
treasurer.
MacRae said he was shocked to receive the
award.
"I'm at a loss for words," he said. "This
trophy truly is an honour and I hope that I did
enough to earn this."
MacRae said that he enjoys helping others,
as well as promoting Lionism. He said one of
his current goals is to encourage more
women to join the community group.
Keller lost her sight and hearing at the age
of 19 months from meningitis. Despite her
hardships, Keller dedicated her life to helping
others and became an active member for the
American Foundation for the Blind, which
was founded in 1921, and she give speeches
Don MacRae
and raised funds for the blind and other
related causes. She visited 35 countries
between 1939 and 1957.
Her dedication and hard work to improve
life for the blind led Winston Churchill to call
her "the greatest woman of our age."
In 1925, Keller challenged the Lions to
become "knights of the blind in this crusade
against darkness," which they have done
selfishly ever since.
Collecting used eyewear is one example of
the many programs that Lions clubs have to
help those afflicted with vision problems.
There are almost 1.4 million Lions
members bettering communities in 192
countries.
