Physiotherapy business opens
at the Seaforth Medical Clinic
By Susan Hundertmark

A year after the out-
patients physiotherapy
department at Seaforth
Community Hospital closed
down, Craig Irwin has
opened an already booming
physiotherapy business at the
Seaforth Medical Clinic.
"This is a very
underserviced area and there
are high waiting lists at the
community hospitals," he
says, adding that patients
must wait from six to eight
weeks for physiotherapy in
Clinton and Goderich.
"Having doctors in the
same building lets us offer
services with a short waiting
list," says Irwin. "Given the
response this month, the
community has really missed
this service."
The majority of clients to
use the physiotherapy service
are suffering from injuries,
either from industrial or
farming accidents.
"We also see some
weekend warrior stuff," he
says of the sports injuries
he's treated.
Both Irwin and his wife
Sandra, who does reception,
scheduling and billing at the
clinic, are from the Lucknow
area where they grew up on
dairy and beef farms.
"We're very familiar with
the injuries that happen on
farms from repetition and
trying to tough it out," he
says.
Through physiotherapy,
Irwin tries to correct joint
Sandra and Craig Irwin
disfunction and uses exercise
to maintain the full
movement of the joint.
The therapy also includes
education about posture,
anatomy and ergonomics.
"The more they can
understand why I get them to
do exercise, the more they
buy into the therapy," he
says.
Irwin says he also plans to
offer a series of two to four
sessions on osteoporosis and
helpful weight-bearing
exercises for that condition,
cardiovascular exercises for
people with breathing
difficulties and COP, cardiac
rehabilitation for patients
who have had heart attacks or
are at risk and fibromyalgia.
Triangle Discount closing
after 3o years in Seaforth
By Susan Hundertmark

After close to 30 years on
Main Street, Triangle
Discount is closing at the end
of April.
The Seaforth store is one
of two in the chain of 17
Triangle Discount stores
closing as owner Nelson
Franks, of Wingham prepares
for retirement.
"Eventually, they'll all be
closing, or at least the ones
he doesn't sell," says
manager Penny Lansink.
Two of the seven stores
that have been sold during
the past four years are in
Chesley and Harriston.
Lansink, who's been
manager of the corner variety
store for the past 18 years,
says customers were
unhappy to learn the store
was closing after the decision
was made a week ago last
Thursday.
"All my regulars are
disappointed. It's a sad
time," she says.
While the Seaforth
Triangle Discount has been
up for sale for the last five
years, sales at the store have
been dropping during the
same period.
"It's difficult to keep going
in a small town," says
Lansink. "It wasn't.profitable
to keep it going."
Lansink, who's is the only
full-time employee and three
part-time employees will be
losing their jobs as the store
closes.
"It's a loss, especially for
the high school students
because it was a good job for

The Huron United Way is
looking for volunteers to
plan the 2004 campaign
strategy to raise a goal of
$200,000.
The 13 member agencies
of Huron United are facing
increasing financial
challenges and the United
Way is hoping to recruit
community -minded
volunteers to lend their
knowledge and resources in
planning this year's
campaign, says a press
release from executive
director Melodie Northey.
The United Way is also
looking for a citizen's review
panel to allocate the money
raised.
A meeting will be held on
Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30
p.m. at St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary School in Clinton
for interested volunteers.

says.
The store has always sold
stationary, health and beauty
supplies, over-the-counter
drugs, tobacco, lottery tickets
and candy.
Other topics he hopes to
address in seminars are
headache and back pain
management.
Because the clinic is
outside the hospital, OHIP
does not cover any of the
physiotherapy services there
but Irwin points out that they
are usually covered by
extended health benefits, auto
insurance or worker's
compensation.
No doctor referral is
necessary for appointments.
Irwin Physiotherapy also
offers customized orthotics,
and braces for knees, elbdws,
ankles and wrists for sport
and work.

The Blue Box is. Coming!
Starting in May, your household
will be joining millions of others
across Ontario who are helping
reduce their waste through Blue
Box recycling, a system that real-
ly works.
Blue Boxes will soon be here and
they are easy to use. During the
next two weeks, each household
in your community will receive a
blue recycling box along with
detailed information regarding the
materials collected and the proper
way to place them at the curb.
You can be part of the recycling
program by simply collecting and
storing newspapers, magazines,
boxboard and cardboard boxes,
glass bottles and jars, beverage
and food cans, and household
plastic containers for Blue Box
collection.
Properly sort the materials and
place them on the correct side of
the road for collection.
Your recycling program can only
be a success if we all participate.
This service is brought to you by
the award winning Bluewater
Recycling
Association, a
non-profit munic-
ipal cooperative.
