But, he also warned them that the industry has to find ways to reduce its vulnerability in the international market in the future. "Our consumers have been Stan Eby very positive and very loyal and we have to build on that. We need more processing here, more competition on the processing side," said Eby. Eby told close to 50 Huron County beef producers that he spent most of his time in Washington countering rumours that an open border between Canada and the U.S. will completely flood the U.S. market with Canadian beef. "We all know what rumours can do and we had to be there to counter the rumours. One week's kill here will not flood their markets," he said. Asked why one case of BSE in Canada has devastated the Canadian beef industry but why the same number in the U.S. hasn't done the same there, Eby said Canadian beef farmers are far too dependent on exports. "While the U.S. was shut out of its export market, the U.S. only exports 10 per cent of their beef. But, Canada exports 40 to 50 per cent of theirs. They have a far lower dependence on exports," he said. Eby said that while he doesn't know of any beef farmers who've had to declare bankruptcy yet, he said he knows the feedlot operators are hurting the worst. "Overall, people are working their way through this financial hurt. We hope we can get the market functioning again and that we'll have enough equity left to he able to rebound," he said. While March 22 was one target date for a reopened border that has now passed, Eby said that if the border doesn't open by September, the Cattlemen's Association is already working on plans for the financial assistance that will be needed, along with a plan to increase processing plants in Canada. He added that the Canadian Bankers' Association has been HUBBELL TURF MANAGEMENT "For all your lawn maintenance needs" Call now for a free estimate on power lawn sweeping 887-9054 Toll free 1-888-393-3003 Brian Hubbell 5 Cars Under ` '20,0000 (Where Do I Sign?) 2004 Ford Focus SE Wagon P S 5,991. 2004 Ford Taurus LX rrnt =19,995. 2004 Ford Ranger Edge SC 4x2 .F119,995. _ 4 Car and Driver Inest - 5 years running? 2004 Ford Focus SE 2004 Ford Mustang Coupe .„J19,995' • PULS, 11. -ETM Gere SpA *momPack.le.0 ern lam 2101 M Iha4:" 16 AI,.lnm Wheels C;reh Purch;, , • 122S1SSR 16' Tim • t.N6er wm ed StwrwN Wiwi Get Automatic for Only 51 more! "A number of lenders have been patient and they will have to be if we are all going to work through this," he said. Eby said that while the federal government has been very supportive with the various aid packages for Canadian beef farmers, it will soon be up to the provincial government to do the same. Mark Ishoy, general manager of Gencor Foods, which is setting up a beef packing plant in Kitchener, told local farmers that while the packing business was exported out of the country during the past 10 to 15 years, Gencor plans to bring it back to Ontario. "We need a strong packing industry to go forward," he said. "Not having a cow plant in Ontario was not a good thing for the long-term health of the industry." With the U.S. border closed, Ishoy said farmers have been having to send their animals to Alberta to be killed with transportation costs of up to $140 a steer one way. "That was unheard of before the border closed," said Eby. Ishoy said there's a huge market in Muslim countries for the feet, spleens, livers and lungs of Canadian cows. He also said Canadian hides are the best quality in the world and those from Ontario are sought after for the seat leather in fancy cars. He said Gencor is hoping to convince local farmers to produce smaller cows - reducing 1,500 -pound animals down to 1,200 pounds -because consumers are looking for smaller cuts in the grocery store. "If we put lighter cattle through the system, we could put more of them through the system and we might sell more because we've finally listened to what the consumer wants," he said.
