Price raises $5,500 (so far) for cancer
Food bank donations helping, even as recipients continue to increase

During the first night of
his weeklong Campout for
Cancer last Saturday, Bill
Price says the weather made
him wonder if sleeping in a
tent in April was such a
good idea.
"It was so windy that the
tent was shaking and I didn',t
know if it was going to stay
up. It was snowing and at 3
a.m., I had to get up and
gather some rocks out of the
flower beds to fix the tent's
fly, which had broken loose
in places. But, it's been fine
ever since," says Price,
pointing to the rocks that
still line the tent a week
later.
But, at $5,500 in
donations and counting,
Price is looking at the
campaign as a positive
experience.
"I made a lot of new
friends," he says, pointing to
a book of letters he received
from Ms. Spillane's Grade
6/7 class at Seaforth Public
School and a card from the
Seaforth Beavers.
While he continued to
work afternoons and
evenings at his custodial job
at Seaforth Public School,
Price spent the mornings
during his campoutsitting in
front of the tent talking to
visitors and watching the
traffic go by.
"People would bring
coffee and we'd sit and chat
a bit or the truck going by
would give me a toot. The
mornings went by very
quickly," he says.
One morning, a Seaforth
woman who runs a home
daycare business walked
down to Egmondville United
Church and her young
charges made their donations
of a looney or tooney.
Price says he explained to
the children who asked that
he was raising money for the
Canadian Cancer Society for
his mother, two uncles and
aunt who died of cancer and
for the various members of
his church who are fighting
the disease.
"It doesn't matter who you
are. Eventually, there's

going to be someone close to
you who's affected by
cancer," he says.
Price made the
announcement Sunday at
church about the total raised
as the congregation took
over the tent and filled it
with food for the Seaforth
food bank in their Fill a Tent
for Lent campaign.
"Pastor Steve
(Hildebrand) says they filled
the back of a' pick-up 'truck
and all the shelves of the
food bank were full when
they dropped off the food,"
says Price.
Angeline Swart, volunteer
coordinator of the Seaforth
food bank, says Egmondville
United Church's donation
was one of many the food
bank received from local
churches •and schools over
the last 10 days.
"We're going into a tough
time because people
remember us at Christmas
and Easter but don't always
have us in mind the rest of
the year," she says.
Swart says the usage at the
Seaforth food hank is
continuing to-olimh chis+year
with 230 individuals using

"Our numbers never seem
to be Tess than last year's -
there's always an increase,"
she says.
However, Swart says she
celebrated while going
through her files recently
when she found names she
hasn't seen in more than
three years at the food bank.
"We're always getting
new families but there are
some who use the food bank
for a few months and don't
come back. And, you hope
they're on their way past the
hard times they were
having," she says.
Swart adds that the Meat
the Needs of Huron group,
which was spearheaded by
Seaforth and Kippen-area
farmers at Christmas to
donate ground beef to local
food banks, has really
helped.
"Being able to give out
one pound of hamburger for
each person who comes in
has been terrific. We've
received four cows so far
and we've been told there
will be meat available for
some time to come," she
says.
