Lady Samurai volleyball club
preparing for provincials
Huron team has three Seaforth-area players

Members of the Lady
Samurai volleyball club
were busy making final
preparations in Clinton last
week for next weekend's
provincial championships.
,Practicing at St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary School,
the second -year club
consists of three Seaforth-
area players.
"We've had our ups and
downs this season but being
a new team and playing
against city teams I think
we've done pretty well,"
said Keltie Sabin, a 16 -year-
old Goderich resident and
second -year player. "I think
we're actually going to do
pretty good at provincials."
Sabin's teammate and
fellow Goderich resident
Amanda Vincent agreed.
"We just have to work
hard, keep coming to
practice and stay focused
and concentrate," the 15 -
year -old Vincent said.
"We've already improved so
much just from last year."
The Lady Samurai will
travel to Port Colborne from
April 17-18 to compete at
the Tier 4 Ontario
championships for girls 16
and under.
Formed in 2003, the
regional club includes
players from across Huron
County. Joining Sabin and
Vincent from Goderich is
Jennifer Kloepfer, Mary
Anne Carter and Rachel
Southwell. Other players
include Denise Verberne
(Dublin), Tara O'Reilly
(Brucefield), Melissa
Marion (Seaforth), Alicia
Harrison (Grand Bend) and
Alecia Drummon (Clinton).
"There was an opportunity
for a second team in the area
and we seized on that," said
Goderich resident Jeff
Sabin, who serves as the
club's assistant coach. "The
formation of this club has
allowed more girls to play
the sport."
Goderich is already home
to the Huron Tsunami
volleyball program but with
limited roster space and
more girls wanting to take
up the sport, Sabin said the
opportunity to start a second
program was perfect.
Sabin said a number of
Goderich businesses also
helped get the Lady Samurai
off the ground including
ABC Investments, Knights
of Columbus, Maple Leaf
Chapter IODE and
Scotiabank.
When it came time to
recruiting a head coach
Sabin said he was fortunate
to find one of the best in
Brucefield resident Brian
O'Reilly - head coach of
Canadian beach volleyball
Olympic hopefuls Conrad
Leinemann and Rich
Vanhuizen.
O'Reilly, who recently
returned from Brazil where
Leinemann and Vanhuizen
represented Canada at the
Brazil Open as part of the
Federation of International
Volleyball Tour, said he wag
more than willing to help the
Lady Samurai.
"I love to coach - I love to

coach anything, anybody,
anywhere and anyplace,"
O'Reilly said between drills.
"I learn so much about life
and living - it's an awesome
job."
O'Reilly, whose daughter
Tara is also on the team, said
the club is in the midst of a
major recruitment phase.
"We're trying to get
another couple of girls - we
have about four spots that
we need to fill," O'Reilly
said. "We're also trying to
look for more players - girls
that arc in Grade 10 or going
into Grade 11. Any girls
interested in playing the
game that are 18 and under."
Additional players would
help raise the bar for
existing players and, as
O'Reilly said, make the club
more competitive for years
to come.
"We're having a difficult
time with consistency and
we're at a very big height
disadvantage," O'Reilly
said. "The teams we're
playing have a couple of
girls with a lot of height and
that's why we need to recruit
and get some more height."
Clubs looking to challenge
the Lady Samurai at next
weekend's provincial
championships include
Cambridge, Niagara, West
Elgin, Orillia and Sarnia.
Keltic Sabin said O'Reilly
continues to stress the
mental part of thc game -
something that will prove to
he crucial at provincials.
"Brian's been teaching us
a lot about the mental part of
the game and how we really
have to focus on keeping our
mind in check," Sabin said.
"He is so knowledgeable -
not just on the physical
skills but also the mental
part of the game."
The Lady Samurai open
provincial play at 9 a.m. on
April 17 at Lakeshore
Catholic High School in
Port Colborne. Meanwhile,
the Huron Tsunami
continued their provincial
volleyball preparations last
week as well. The Tsunami
will travel to Wingham's
F.E. Madill Secondary
School on April 17 for thc
Tier 2 Ontario
championships.
