Varna Correspondents Red Hat Societyvisits S Exeter Elder Berries tour Cardno's Hall and shop on Main Street By Susan Hundsrtmark Expositor Editor A visit by members of the Red Hat Society's Exeter Elder Berries to Seaforth last week transported a couple of women back to their teen years when they danced at Seaforth's Cardno Hall. "It was back when I was 14 or 15 and was growing up between Seaforth and Clinton," said Lorraine Alexander, of Exeter. "Girls and guys would come on a Friday or Saturday night and , do square dances, waltzes and French minuets. We would dance every dance," she said. The Exeter women were in Seaforth Thursday to enjoy a luncheon at Hurley's Celtic Inn, tour Cardno's Hall and shop on Main Street. During the tour of Cardno's Hall, Yvonne Reynolds, of Exeter, also remembers attending dances there. "I remember a young chap who could really waltz and he made me feel like the greatest dancer," she said. The Red Hat Society, a group of women over 50 who wear purple clothing and red hats with the purpose of having fun and feeling good about aging, is a growing movement across North American. The Exeter group is an offshoot of a group started in Bayfield, which includes several Seaforth members. While the Exeter group has 22 members and can only hold 25, they welcome new members and offer to be an umbrella group to Seaforth women who want to start their own group of the Red Hat Society. Dublin Lions get grant for new steel roof for hall After a year of planning and fundraising, the Dublin hall will soon have a new look. The Dublin Lions Club recently received a $25,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to put a new steel roof on the hall. "We really didn't know how much we would receive so this is great. Now we can begin on getting this project done," said Don Ruston, Dublin Lions Club president. The repairs to the roof cost $12,000 but Ruston said the club is also repairing damage to the ceiling tile and updating the insulation and lighting. "This is the original roof from when the hall was built in the 70s, so it's about time for it to be fixed," he said. "It has leaked in different areas for so long. So we have been planning this upgrade." Ruston said the club first approached West Perth Council, who owns the Helen Street building, for assistance since repairs are not covered by insurance because the water damage had occurred over the past few years. "We're really thankful to Pat Taylor (West Perth clerk) for helping us apply for the Trillium grant ," he said. "These little community centres - it's hard to get them used enough to pay for themselves." He added that the hall is mainly used by the Lions and the Athletic Association, who are in charge of renting out the facility. Ruston said the Lions began raising money for the building renovations a year ago. Funds were raised through different events including dances and the 300 club draw. The Lions also recently held another fundraising event said Ruston, with its first Country Show and Dance. "It was very successful. There was a great turn out and it was really a lot of fun," he said, adding that the club appreciates the help from Mitchell resident and fiddler Bill Irving for helping to organize the event. "We probably wouldn't have been able to do this without all the help we had," said Ruston. He said a volunteer crew of Lions members, the Athletic Association and local people will be starting on the repairs to the hall within the next couple of weeks and they plan to have it completed before June.
