Erica Murray attends national
4-H citizenship seminar
Erica Murray
has returned from
Ottawa where she
St. Columban
participated in a
week long National 4-H Citizenship
Seminar. Erica was one of three delegates
from Ontario who, along with delegates
from across Canada, enjoyed the
experience.
Included in the seminar was a tour of
Parliament Hill and Center Block. They
met with their M.P. Paul Steckle, enjoyed
hearing the Minister of Agriculture, Bob
Speller, during a luncheon, met Peter
McKay and Scott Byson, waved at
Adrienne Clarkson from a distance, and
shook hands with the Prime Minister, Paul
Martin, as he was walking by.
They attended Question Period and
Citizenship Court. At Citizenship Court
they re -affirmed their Canadian
citizenship. Erica was honoured to meet
Heddy Fry, the Parliamentary Secretary for
Citizenship and Immigration, as she
received the "Re -affirmation of
Citizenship" .certificates for the delegates
for Ontario.
The delegates held a debate, which was
very exciting. They enjoyed a bus tour of
the city of Ottawa, visited one of the oldest
churches in Ottawa and visited Fulton's
Sugar Bush, where both the old and new
ways of making maple syrup was modeled.
They also attended a dance during which
they learned to "square dance." Erica
found herself more immersed in the
French
language and
describes her
week long
experience as "awesome,"
Leanne Murray, daughter of Neil and
Glenda Murray, and Laura Devereaux,
daughter of Bill and Connie Devereaux,
have returned to Canada from El Salvador
and Nicaragua and spent some time with
their family and relatives in the area. The
young ladies are part of an experience
facilitated by "One World Organization."
They are currently busy giving
presentations about their experience.
Bob and Ruth Duffy have returned from
a visit with family members in Alberta.
They visited with their daughter and son-
in-law, Jeanette and Bernie Riegger and
family in Stoney Plain. They also visited
their son and daughter-in-law, Randy and
Debbie Duffy and family in Spruce Grove,
Alberta, and attended the 25th wedding
anniversary celebration there for Randy
and Debbie Duffy.
Students at St. Columban School have
been practicing basketball and formed a
senior girls and senior boys' team to
compete with other school teams in
upcoming basketball games. The chess
experts are honing their skills and
strategies for upcoming tournaments.
Everyone is looking forward to an
upcoming "Hawaiian Day," and of course,
a break for Easter.
