"There was always more on our plates - they thought. Canadians needed to eat more. To make us fat was their goal," she says. However, the host homes were two -room shacks with dirt floors, outhouses and bucket showers, no refrigerators, no cars and no air conditioning in 35 to 40 - degree Celsius heat. Cleanliness was very important eve)? though it was very difficult to achieve with hot temperatures and dirt floors. "We had as many as three showers a day and we were forever cleaning our feet," says Devereaux. "There's a stereotype about gringoes (whites) being dirty and sweaty. But, it was a real chore to shower since we had to use a stall outside with a bucket of water," says Murray. "It was simple living but very challenging," adds Devereaux. Because there was no refrigeration, the families shopped for their food everyday and also raised their own chickens. "When you cooked something, you ate it all," says Murray. While they lived in El Salvadore, they spent one week in the city of San Salvador where they took Spanish lessons and then moved to the village of Chinameca where they taught English, computers, art and music at the local community centre. In Managua, Nicaragua, they lived with families in the barrio (a poor neighbourhood) and spent their days helping out at a preschool for children aged three to five. Laura Devereaux and Leanne Murray dance and sing for preschoolers in their three-month stay to learn about life in Central America. "They were the cutest ever. We sang to them a lot. Their favourite song was Singing in the Rain. They sang it with us but they didn't understand it," says Devereaux. A typical day in Nicaragua started with the sound of roosters crowing at 4 a.m., followed by chickens and dogs running into the room and sometimes hiding under the beds. By 7 a.m., everyone was up and showered and having a breakfast of beans, bananas, eggs and cream. After a morning at the preschool, they were home at lunch to eat and shower. They visited other villages, sometimes walking two hours down a mountain and three hours back up again. Even though bus fare is only 17 cents, the price is too expensive for many and Vehicles stolen in Huron East found in South Huron Huron OPP A snowmobile stolen from the parking lot of the Red Maple Inn in Vanastra was recovered at a South Huron residence on April 1 after Huron OPP received a Crime Stoppers tip. 'For most domestic cars and light trucks (excludes diesel engines) UMITED TIME OFFER walking was the preferred method of transportation. While there, they watched a federal election take place, in which the locals in their village worked hard to campaign for the FMLN (Farabundi Marti Liberation National), a left wing party but watched the right wing party, ARENA regain power. Both Murray and Devereaux said they were surprised at how politicized the people were, wearing t - shirts promoting their party of choice and the streets full of people on Election Day. "They take their right to vote much more seriously. Everyone was so passionate about the election," says Murray. "It makes me want to learn more about my government. I didn't care before," she says. They also visited sites of historic significance during El Salvador's civil war, which ended in 1992. One village of 700 were all massacred, except for one woman, near the Honduran border. -"We were supposed to meet her but we didn't. We heard submitted photo Nicaragua during testimonials from a lot of people who were in the war," says Devereaux. And, while Devereaux suffered through a month-long kidney infection that almost cut short her trip, she says she's glad she didn't miss a moment of the experience. "There were times, especially during the kidney infection that I wanted to go home but we made it through," she says. After their experience, Devereaux now plans to go back to school for child and youth work and return to work in the third world, possibly the Dominican Republic. Murray also wants to travel to more third world countries and plans to study international development. "If I say I want to change the world, that's arrogant because it implies my vision of the world is the best," says Devereaux. "They don't need Westernization - they need basics like health, clothing and water. That's where I'd like to start helping," adds Murray. THE HURON EXPOSITOR, APRIL 7, 2004 3 THERE :THING LIKE.
