Huron East's recent underserviced
designation will help recruitment
From Pogo 1
The loss of Dr. Tong, along with financial constraints at
the clinic have also led to restructuring at the clinic and the
lay-off of two of the clinic's secretarial staff members.
"It was regrettable but it was a hard decision we had to
make to stay within our financial means," said Fisher.
Devereaux said she's been communicating with two
doctors over the past few months who have shown some
interest in moving into the Huron -Perth area but added it's
too early to say if either one will move to Seaforth or the
area.
A recent announcement that Huron East has been
designated as underserviced will help with the recruitment
of more doctors, said Devereaux.
She said the Ministry of Health will provide $40,000 for
any doctor that commits to a four-year stay and will pick up
travel costs of doctors visiting to the area to consider
relocating.
Being declared underserviced will put Duron East on "a
level playing field' with other municipalities in the area,"
said Huron -Perth Healthcare Alliance administrator
Andrew Williams on Monday.
"We've been trying to secure the underserviced status for
a number of years now - it's been a problem for us - and it
will help a lot," he said.
Williams said that while the Seaforth hospital foundation
has been providing the $40,000 tuition assistance for new
doctors in the past, that money can now be "refocussed."
While the rate of doctors moving into the area has
decreased recently, Devereaux said doctors on locum are
still working in Seaforth.
"People like the new, young doctors on locum and the
locum gives them a chance to see Seaforth and let them
decide if they'd like to locate here permanently," she said.
"We have a lot of things in place to help us," she said.
Devereaux said Seaforth could accommodate two more
doctors, increasing the total to eight.
"Even with six doctors, we're lucky here. There are a lot
of communities that are a lot worse off," she said.
