at Ontario Games

Although the two
Seaforth-area skaters did not
bring home a medal from
last week's Ontario Winter
Games with the Exeter
Classics synchronized
skating team, they gained
experience that will take
them further.
"It was a great time. We
had so much fun," said
Sarah Van Doornik who is
in her second year with the
Exeter Classics along with
Laura Delchiaro.
"I think we did fairly well
and we had a lot of fun. It
was a good experience."
said Delchiaro.
The 15 -year-old skaters
placed sixth with the four-
year-old Exeter novice team
during the first year for
synchronized skating to be
offered as a sport at the
Ontario Winter Games in
London from March 11- 14.
The Exeter
team placed
11th at a
competition
held earlier this
month at the
Mississauga
Hershey
Centre, which
qualified them
to compete at
the provincial
level .

The top 12 teams in the
qualifier went on to the
provincial and national
games with the top six
competing at the Canadian
games in Brandon,
Manitoba, held March 4 -7,
and the 7th to 12th
competing at the Ontario
Winter Games.
"I was a little nervous
going into the Games. There
was a lot of people there,"
said Delchiaro.
"I wasn't so much
nervous as I was pumped. It
was an all -Ontario
competition and we were
able to go see some the
other events happening,"
Other sports at the
Ontario Winter Games
include fencing, figure
skating, gymnastics, men's
and women's hockey, judo,
ringette, shooting and speed
skating.
Delchiaro said the 15 -
member Exeter team, with
skaters aged 12 - 17,
performed twice during the
four-day event but the
competition was difficult.
"A lot of the teams have
really improved over the
year," she said.
"We had some tecbnical
difficulties closer to the end
with one of our elements.
We were supposed to face
the judges at the end but we
turned the wrong way and
faced the audience," said
Van Doornik.
While the Exeter team
performed the same routine
it's done all year, the skaters
were trying to add as much
difficulty to the routine as
possible - including
footwork, armholds, unison
and speed - before the
Ontario Winter Games.
"With everything going
good we could have got
third place but just with
everyone's nerves, being
away from home and
performing in front of tons
of people, it was
overwhelming," said coach
Kathy McLlwain.
"Getting a medal was our
goal but we had a couple
falls and a little mix-up at
the end."
McLlwain said even
though the other teams
participating in the Games
practise four hours during
the week compared to the
one hour a week they
practice, the competition
was not difficult.
"I think we were capable
of getting a medal. They
day. She had to be pulled
from the Games.
'We were short a player
but we still did well. I am
pleased with the overall
actions of girls and it was
great experience that will
help them in future events ,"
she said.
The Exeter Classics will
be ending their season soon
with performances at
carnivals in Zurich,
Stratford and Exeter.
McLlwain said
registration for next year's
team will be taken on. March
25 and April 1 during
practice in Exeter. For more
