Brodhagen rider taking part
in Canadian Youth World Cup
By Marc Hukt
Special to The Huron Expositor
Megan Patterson, a
student at Mitchell District
High School (MDHS), will
represent Canada at the
American Quarter Horse
Association Youth World
Cup competition in
Australia this summer.
The Youth World Cup is
an educational, leadership -
based event, which
culminates with
participants showcasing
their skills.
Patterson, the daughter of
Dan and Kathy, owners of
Twin Bales Ranch, said she
views the event as more of
an educational experience
than a strict competition.
"I'll learn a lot more than
I'll be competing," she
said. "I hope that I can get
recognition from the horse
industry and become more
knowledgeable with not
only the horses but with life
tactics."
Patterson, 18, was one of
nine youths named to Team
Canada for the event, which
will run from June 26 until
July 4. The Brodhagen
resident will serve as one of
two alternate riders.
Each participating
country may choose up to
five competing riders, two

alternate riders and three
non -competing youth to
serve as leadership
members.
Horses are supplied by
the host country and
distributed via a draw
during the Opening
ceremonies.
Three riders are
designated from each team
to compete in. Western
Horsemanship, Western
Pleasure, Western Riding.
Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt
Seat Equitation.
Showmanship and Trail.
Two riders are chosen to
compete in Reining and
Cutting classes.
In Canada, members of
Team Canada were chosen
from a group of youths
from all over Canada who
arc Canadian citizens and
arc mcmhcrs-in-good-
standing with the American
Quarter Horse Youth
Association. Consideration
is also given to those who
display excellent
horsemanship skills in a
variety of events and who
volunteer in their local
communities or equine
sport organizations.
The five competing riders
are Ontario residents Jessie
Godin of Murillo; Sarah
Black of Orangeville;
Matthew Brown of
Enterprize; Emily Sullivan
of Nova Scotia and Jessica
Conti of British Columbia.
Joining Patterson as an
alternate rider is Kathy
Martins of Quebec. Kirby
Cates. of Saskatoon, and
Matthew Hudson, of New
Brunswick, are the two
leadership members.
As an alternate rider,
Patterson said she would
get the best of both worlds
by hanging out at the
competitions and at the
leadership events.
"I get to sec both sides of
it because the leaders get
different events than the

Quarter Horse
competitors do," she
explained. "I'll get to do a
little of both."
Scott Newman, of
Billings, Montana, will be
the Team Canada's coach
and Manitoba's Judy
Whittingham will be the
team's manager.
Patterson was one of only
two Ontarians to make it to
a semi-final round at the
world's largest single -breed
horse show in the world last
October.
In a previous interview
with The Advocate, she
mentioned that attending
the World Cup was one of
her goals.
"It was such an honour to
be named to the team." she
said, adding that she is
looking forward to meeting
people from different
countries and cultures.
"And I look forward to
going there as soon as
possible and getting away
from all this snow."
Optimist club encourages
Seaforth to 'Just Ask'
The Optimist club of
Seaforth has the answer
you have been looking
for all these years. They
are just waiting for you to
"Just Ask" thc question.
The Optimist club of
Seaforth recently took part
in thc "Just Ask" movement
March 12-21. an effort
designed to encourage kcal
residents to become
involved in community
service.
"The movement was
designed to spread the news
about Optimist clubs," said
Club President Joe Smith.
"People always want to
know what Optimist Clubs
do but many never ask. We
want people to 'Just Ask."
This is the first year for
Optimist International's
Seaforth Optimist Club
"Just Ask" movement,
which was designed to
spark interest in the civic
service club organization.
Those interested in learning
more about what the
Optimist Club of Seaforth
does or is interested in
joining the club are asked to
"Just Ask" a member of the
club.
"Wc always want to
encourage anyone interested
in our club to come to a club
meeting or one of our
events," said Smith.
Optimist clubs arc known
for 'Bringing Out the Best in
Kids.' Since each club is
autonomous, Optimist
volunteers decide how
to serve the children in
their community.
In some
communities, clubs conduct
scholarship programs, sports
activities, mentoring
programs, after-school
programs, and childhood
cancer initiatives.
The Seaforth Club recently
has been involved with the
Spelling Bee, Essay contest
and upgrades to our local
park. We have been in
discussions to be part of a
local skateboard park.
