Huron Expositor, 2004-03-17, Page 11Sports Vick's cousins extend support in Union Wes Vick's young cousins, Emily and Simon Brekelmans, of Union, Ont. are two of his biggest supporters. The two students at Sparta Public School - Emily, 10, is in Grade 5, brother Simon, 7, Grade 2 have been collecting pop tabs since August because they hope to be able to use them to buy medical equipment. And, while they originally hoped to help Wes, 23, of Seaforth, after his dirt bike accident last summer which left him paralzyed from the waist down, the pop tab collection is now aimed at anyone who can benefit. "This is Emily's project. She and Simon were up to visit Wes in the hospital twice a week after his accident and Emily still calls him every two weeks to see how he's doing," says Wes's mom Liz. "We're really proud of her. She was named student of the month at her school for her efforts. It's quite an achievement," she says. Liz adds that while Wes has two wheelchairs - one for indoors and one for outdoors - the collection will be used for a wheelchair for someone else who needs it. "It won't benefit Wesley but it will sure as heck benefit somebody," she says. "My sister has bags of pop tabs in her basement and I have two million here (in Seaforth). I think it takes four million tabs for a motorized wheelchair," says Liz. Since Wes's accident last summer, the Seaforth community has been holding fundraisers for the needed medical equipment and renovations to the Vick home. "People don't have to do that anymore. The renovations are paid for and Wes is doing okay," says Liz. But, Emily is still going strong collecting in her community. "It makes me feel good because we're helping someone," says Emily in a recent article in the St. Thomas Times - Journal. "We have to continue," adds Simon. "We don't have enough - not even for one wheelchair." Liz says she's proud of how her niece and nephew have taken on the campaign. "They're still at it. They're very determined," she says. It was Buffalo's first loss of the tournament. Kaye McLagan played excellent making some huge saves. Mitchell outshot Buffalo 19 to 14. March 14 Championship Game Mitchel] Meteors 1 vs Buffalo 0 Mitchell scorer, Caley Nicholson Coaches' comments: Mitchell Meteors win the gold medal. Very close checking game but not a lot of room to get quality shots away. Our goal, Sarah passed a beautiful pass out in front of the net and Caley one timed a shot just above the goalie's pad. Excellent team effort. The defense played a well positioned game. Buffalo was a very fast skating team and our girls skated right with them.
