basement, using flashlights
until a generator could be set
up and practising the
registration service the Red
Cross provides during
emergencies.
"The Red Cross's major
role in a disaster is taking
information from all the
people involved and creating
a registry so that family
members can find each other.
That's one of the big things
the Red Cross did during the
9-11 disaster in New York,"
said Papple.
"If someone wants to know
where a family member is and
whether or not they are hurt,
the Red Cross would be able
to tell them. It's to avoid
situations where people have
to go from hospital to hospital
looking for their families," he
said.
In the event of a four-day
winter storm in Huron East,
Papple said the Seaforth
Agriplex and the Brussels
arena would make the best
shelters for residents with no
heat because of the facilities'
generators. And, if the
Seaforth arena acquires a
generator, it would be a better
shelter still because of its
showers in the change rooms.
He said the Red Cross
keeps a local supply of
blankets and comfort kits
(containing soap, toothbrushes
and towels) at the branch
office and at local ambulance
stations in the event of a
disaster.
The Huron -Perth -Oxford
Red Cross branch in Stratford
recently helped compile a
shelter survey for Huron
County, identifying 22
buildings across the county
that could be used as shelters
in an emergency.
The survey, completed in
2003, looked at schools,
arenas and other public
buildings in both urban and
rural areas that have sleeping
and cooking facilities and the
contact people that "would be
able to open the doors at 3
a.m. in a snowstorm," said
Red Cross branch manager
Bettianne Hedges.
Hedges said Huron County
has "a keen group of
volunteers" that is trying to
recruit more volunteers.
"We're trying to increase
our numbers in all
communities to get people to
be prepared for themselves
and for other members of their
communities. Often, it's the
most vulnerable groups in a
community that are hardest hit
during an emergency," she
said.
Hedges said the shelter
survey was done under new
provincial requirements after
the terrorist attack in the
United States two years ago.
During the simulation in
Hensall, the Red Cross
volunteers were given cards
with possible emergency
situations written on them and
had to respond - helping to
arrange an ambulance for a
senior unable to get out of her
home that had no heat, in one
instance.
"The Red Cross's specialty
is dealing with shelter, food
and clothing. We created a
better understanding between
the Red Cross and the
municipality of Huron East of
what we can accomplish in an
emergency," said Papple.
Huron East's emergency
coordinator Marty Bedard
attended the simulation in
Hensall.
"Marty saw we were quite
well trained," said Papple. "He
said he would call on us for
anything requiring registration
and a quick evacuation."
Bedard agreed saying he';II
glad to know the local Red
Cross volunteers are available
in an emergency.
"If we ever have to set up a
shelter, they're good that way.
But, hopefully, we never have
to use them," he said.
Papple said he and his wife
Summer, who is the Red
Cross disaster services chair
for Huron and Perth, plan to
continue running simulations
at bi-monthly meetings and
hope to involve local groups
like the Boy Scouts.
"It's hard to keep our
volunteers practised up and
interested - if you're not doing
training, you lose volunteers
to boredom," he said.
"I think the volunteers
we've got are well-trained.
We just need more. It would
be nice to have two or three in
each community in Huron that
we could depend on in an
emergency," said Papple.
The next meeting will be
held in Stratford on March 22
at 7 p.m. at 100 Gordon St.

Big Bike Ride for Stroke
making first trip to Seaforth
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
The Big Bike Ride for
Stroke, held by the Huron -
Perth -Oxford chapter of the
Heart and Stroke Foundation,
received permission from
Huron East council to be held
in Seaforth on Wednesday,
May 19.
Ten teams of 29 people from
throughout Huron County will
each ride a 30 -scat bicycle
(with a driver supplied by the
Heart and Stroke Foundation)
throughout the streets of
Seaforth to raise a goal of
$140,000.
The ride is being held for the
first time in Seaforth to replace
rides held during the past eight
years in Goderich and Exeter.
"It's the 10th year for the
Stratford office and we're
having a 10 -year celebration.
We found it was getting a little
stale in the other
communities," says campaign
manager Angela Horbanuik.
Horbanuik said thc Heart
and Stroke Foundation is
partnering with Hurley's Celtic
Inn in Seaforth, which will be
the ride's headquarters for the
event and provide
refreshments for the riders.

"We supply the driver so
riding the big bike isn't too
hard but it is a lot more work
than people think. You can
work up a sweat riding that
bike," she says.
Participating teams are
being asked to choose a
decade to represent, dress the
part and provide music to play
on the CD player hooked up to
the big bike.
"We looking for lots of
people to come and ride," she
says.
