Seaforth Cooperative Children's
Centre moves into new building

the Seaforth Cooperative
Children's Centre opened for
business Monday at its new
location on
Chalk Street.
"Everybody
was very
excited when
they came in.
They couldn't
believe the
size, the light
and the
brightness of
the new
building,"
says director
Sandra Jansen.
"A lot of people came in
to visit and say hello. It was
non-stop all day," she said.
During the year-long
project to build a new
centre, SCCC raised
$165,000 but because all the
bills have not yet been
received, the final costs of
the building are not yet
known, says SCCC
president Lauren
Rooyakkers.
While the daycare started
out raising $30,000 for five
used portables donated by
the Avon Maitland District
School Board, the daycare
board decided to go ahead
with a new building when
Sun North president Dan
Lambert offered free labour
and site management for the
project.
While the building was
originally estimated to cost
$60,000 for materials with
donated labour from local
tradespeople, the estimates
increased to $100,000 when

SCCC staff and volunteers
spent much of last week and
the weekend moving from
the portables on Market
Street to the new building
beside Seaforth Public
School.
"All the hard work has
really paid off," says Jansen.
While the building is
complete, the daycare must
still complete its
playground, moving play
structures from the old site
and creating toddler and
preschool yards, complete
with fencing.
As well, the parking lot
and a sidewalk around the
perimeter of the building
must still be installed.
The paving and the
landscaping will not begin
until weather conditions
permit. A grand opening is

Jr. D meeting tomorrow night
From Pogo 1
a public meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at
Hurley's Celtic Inn.
Organizer Jason Papple said he's not
feeling any increased pressure to succeed at
resurrecting the Seaforth Junior D
Centenaires since the London group has
withdrawn its interest.
"I've got confidence in our group. If we
can't make a go of it as a community group,
there's no way the London group could
have," said Papple.
Brent Ladds, president of the OHA, said
Monday that while the London group has
withdrawn its application, he hasn't received
an application from the Seaforth group yet.
"April 15 will be the last consideration and
the Seaforth group, at this late date will need
a strong majority of league support," said
Ladds.
The Seaforth group plans to meet with the
OHA league and gain its support on March
21.
Ladds said the main question that must be
answered by the Seaforth group is how the
situation is different from two years ago
when the community allowed the team to
fold.
Along with the business plan, with a list of
committed sponsors, Ladds said the Seaforth
group has to show a strong player talent pool,
which not only lists available players but
shows that they have been contacted and
have committed to join the team.
"A list of players is not good enough. We
have to know there's enough available talent
to make it a competitve team," he said.
Papple said he's not yet had any new
investors join the original eight Seaforth
investors, whom have yet to be named.
"We have enough investors to get us up
and running. Now we need support from the
community. We'll see who comes out to
Thursday's meeting and what interest they
bring," he said.
Papple said he's hoping for a greater
number than the 30 who attended the public
meeting held by the McGafka Pro group.
"It would be embarrassing to see no one
support junior hockey when we're supposed
to be a hockey town. Too few people were
doing too much for the Centenaires before
they folded. I'd like to see people come out
who want hockey to be successful in town,"
he said.
Parents of players in the bantam, midget
and juvenile age groups, who are close to the
age range for junior hockey, are being
particularly encouraged to get involved.
"This will be a team for local players to
play with their friends in front of their
families. A lot of people in town have good
memories of playing for the Centenaires," he
said.
