THE HURON EXPOSITOR, MARCH 3, 2004-9 News Students get a look at skilled trades By Sara Campbell Expositor Staff Students are helping students find a fun and exciting career in skilled trades through an apprenticeship. The Huron -Perth Catholic District School's Grade 7 apprentice workshop was at St. James School in Seaforth on Feb. 24, the first school in Huron County to take part in the new program. "We are not trying to tell the students what careers to choose but show them what options are available,"said Tim Martens, coordinator of the workshop for the board. "Our message to the students is do this because you want to do this." Martens said the workshop, which launched this school year in Perth County, was taken from another program by the board where Grade 8 students were taken to their district high school for the day to tour the technology classes. He added that as the Ministry of Education continues to change its expectations for students, the board wants to ensure students get an early start at their career paths. "We wanted to able to bring the workshop to the Grade 7 students and give them a practical experience," he said. The workshop is funded through the board and the Huron Manufacturing Group with the supplies and materials also donated by area business, said Martens. The workshops include engineering - designing cars on a computer; woodworking - where students made picture frame; electrical - soldering wires; plastics - students made their own golf tees; mechanics - small engine repair and starter repair; and plumbing - cutting copper piping. "They're fun things to do that the students can take interest in and have something to take home to show what they did," said Martens. Agricultural co-op returns to board By Stew Slater Spedd to The H uron Expositor An agricultural version of the co-operative education model will return in September to the Avon Maitland District School Board, almost two years after a lack of funding forced the elimination of something called "Bridges to Agriculture." This time, however, the course work will be delivered exclusively through online instruction. At a regular board meeting Tuesday, Feb. 24, trustees were informed about a pair of programs scheduled to he added to the successful Avon Maitland Distance Education Centre (AMDEC). Since its inception four years ago, AMDEC has become a money-maker of sorts for the Seaforth-based school board, not only providing particular courses which might not be available at some smaller secondary schools within the district, but also attracting out -of -board and even out -of -country students - and tuition fees - because of the scope of courses and ease of use. The Feb. 24 presentation, led by AMDEC principal Laurie Hazzard, outlined the online school's co-operative education section. Hazzard boasted that, because course work Can be done at any time of the day or night, the AMDEC co-op model can appeal to students who might normally have given up on secondary school under more traditional constraints. "(AMDEC coordinators) meet the kids where they're at, and that includes running their orientation sessions on Saturday mornings," Hazzard explained. In September, 2004, AMDEC's co-op program will grow in two significant ways: "eCo-op" and an Agricultural co-op, which is essentially a replacement for Bridges to Agriculture. With "eCo-op," co-operative work placement hosts will no longer have to be within easy commuting distance of Huron and Perth Counties. Instead, they'll opt for having co-op students do their work remotely, through the internet. According to AMDEC faculty member Sherry Mason, this option might be particularly appealing for some of the school's out -of -board clients, such as Department of National Defense personnel in Europe. And possible work placement partners might he involved 'in software development, wehpage design, translation, journalism, or space-age engineering. Agricultural co-op coordinator Trevor Riehl, meanwhile, said it's the students from within Avon Maitland territory who will benefit most from the revamped Bridges to A That program was funded on a one-time basis from outside the regular Education Ministry budget, and the'board wasn't able to commit further funding of its own once that flmding wound down. Riehl noted the online version of agricultural co-op won't suffer from one drawback of the Bridges program - that it was tied to a particular location and had to move from school to school around the board, with some students either waiting until it arrived in their town or driving a significant distance to take Part He also said co-op education fits in well with another board - administered program called the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP); work hours compiled while on co-op placement can be put toward the completion of an apprenticeship. Rich! told trustees that atxmt 120 students went through the Bridges to Agriculture program over its three-year existence, and it filled a need among the area's businesses for building a future employment base.
