Sports Young curling enthusiasts honour great Canadian at Vanastra bonspiel By Shelley McPhee Heist and Matt Shurrie Sandra Schmirler must have been smiling down from heaven. The great Canadian curler who died in 2000 is still being honoured on rinks across Canada - this past weekend at the Vanastra Curling Club. Erin Jamula of Goderich, and a student at McMaster University, gathered more than 60 friends, family and young curling enthusiasts together for the 3rd annual Hand -in -Hand Bonspiel in support of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation. Sixteen teams took part in the Feb. 21 bonspiel which featured curlers as young as eight years old and those into their late teens. Erin noted, "After Sandra died in 2000 I wanted to do something in her memory and obviously since she was such a great curler I wanted to do something curling related. I wanted to run a bantam/junior bonspiel so I contacted the foundation in the summer of 2001 and they put me in contact with Joan McCusker who was the second on Sandra Schmirler's team which was incredibly exciting." Snowy weather and bad driving conditions were not enough to keep the curlers away with teams coming from throughout Huron County including Goderich, Seaforth, Wingham, Exeter and Kitchener -Waterloo. Cora Bennett, of Seaforth a Grade 12 high school student, has been curling for several years and enjoyed the fun and the fundraising aspects of the spiel. "I was in Grade 7 when Sandra Schmirler died. She' loved her sport and her family. When I read a book about her life and needed a Shelley McPhee Haist photos (Above) bonspiel organizer Erin Jamula of Goderich with two of the youngest curlers Brianne Higenell of Seaforth, 9, and Kelsey Falconer of Londesborough, 8. Sandra Schmirler, who died at age 36, is regarded as one of Canada's greatest curlers. A native of Biggar, Saskatchewan, she escalated to greatness by skipping her team to the first-ever gold medal in the Olympics. Erin said it was fitting that this year's bonspiel was held on the opening day of the Scott Tournament of Hearts — also known as Sandra Schmirler Day. The national event took place in Red Deer, Alberta with a breakfast and live telethon to raise funds for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation in support families with children — — — — — — — — — — — — — MI — — — — — — — — — — tt— 1 Clinton & Seaforth Area 2004 Phonebook Corrections Please clip -out and insert in your phonebook ADD UNDER CLINTON Oster, Dorothy change to Riehl, D. 30 Gordon St. 482-5449 Town and Country Support Services, 317 Huron 482-9264 Betty Cardno Memorial Centre 317 Huron 482-9264 Supportive Housing, 482-1722 Schade, Delford 33990 Birchcliff Sideroad 482-8579 DELETE UNDER CLINTON Koene, Joe 33990 Birchcliff Sideroad 482- 7445 Wilson, Dorothy 229 Mary St. Clinton ADD UNDER BLYTH Blyth Veterinary Services, 234 Queen St. 523-9551 Pianovations, 287 Main St. Londesboro 523-4535 ADD UNDER BAYFIELD plovers in Bayfield, 11 Main St. 565-5161 ADD UNDER SEAFORTH Lee, B & T 34 West Front St. Egmondville 522-0556 Toellner R & S 75 Water St. Egmondville 522-1588 Janmaat, S. 49 Harpurhey Rd. 522-0519 Smith, Derek 18 Church 527-1649 Arts Tony Financial Group, 15 Main, 527-0794 Godkin, Lavem RR 1 Walton 527-1877 DELETE UNDER SEAFORTH Smith, Derek 527-0177 Janmaat, John RR 2 522-0519 Workman, K 13 W.
