Public speaking was held at Hensall Legion on Feb. 17, a challenge for judges Doug Walker, Tracy Whitson-Bahro and Eleanor Darke. First place winners Jason Schnieder, Crystal Willert and Jacqueline Bengough advance to Zone level, to be held at Exeter Legion on March 6. Second place winners were Theresa Hartman and Lauren Haberer, and placing third were Stacy Bedard and Margaret Ainslie. Due to weather conditions, Hensall Legion cancelled their January meeting, however they hosted a Zone Euchre on Jan. 24. It was a very successful day with excellent representation from the Branches in the Zone to make 45 teams. The winning teams advance to the District level, to be held in Hensall Kincardine. The February meeting was held on Wednesday evening. Four new members were initiated into the Branch, Firemen Dan Taylor and Dave Long as associate members and Greg Bahro and Branch Padre Tracy Whitson-Bahro as non-voting affiliates. At Hensall United Church Fred Darke's sermon was "Look and Listen." Lauralee Schnieder was the organist with Ross Riley greeting the worshippers. The ushers were Linda and Ken Firman with Maggie Jinks lighting the candle. Teens who love the outdoors may he interested in a job at Camp Menesetung. The offering was received by Al Hoggarth and Harry Smith. The annual meeting will be held after church on Sunday Feb. 29. The homemade soup, sandwich and dessert lunch will be held on March 4. The World's Day of Prayer will be held on March 5 at Carmel Presbyterian Church. Rev Gwen Brown will be the guest speaker. The annual meeting of the Hensall and Community Horticultural Society was held on Feb. 17 at Hensall United Church. President Luanne Phair welcomed everyone, including some new members and two youth members. The guest speaker Shari Robinson of. the Rug Linc showed several of her hand - hooked rugs made from reconditioned fabric. Sandra Turner spoke on the trip she has arranged to Canada Blooms. She also talked about Varna's celebration this summer. A new way of gardening was described in detail by Shari Robinson. The next meeting will be on March 17 at Hensall United Church. The speaker will he Carol Steckle speaking on "What's New In The Plant World." In honour of the day everyone is asked to wear green. By Liz Sangster Schoonderwoerd returns from home trip to Europe Scott Schoonderwoerd, along with a couple of his friends, Nick Seebach and Mike Riehl, have recently returned home from an enjoyable vaction in Europe. Together with much sightseeing and socializing they also visited with some of the Schoonderwoerd relatives in Holland before Dublin flying into Copenhagen, Denmark, where they met up with a former Mitchell High School classmate, Nick Larsen, who has been working in Denmark. A former Dublin parishioner, Ron Ferguson, died in Stratford on Feb. 16. The funeral mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Stratford with Rev. Father Dick Bester officiating. By Dorothy Dillon Kippen United Church Women draws good crowd for bingo Fun and fitness got everyone at Queensway Nursing Flame Queensway Nursing and Retirement Home in Hensall off to a great start Monday when residents met in the sunroom to work through the routines. In the afternoon, a good crowd turned out for bingo with the Kippen United Church Women. Breakfast group met Tuesday morning for pancakes and syrup, with breakfast sausages and honeydew melon slices. Piping hot coffee and tea alon with good conversation completed the meal. Auxiliary volunteer Edna Dietz assisted. The Rev. Lil Wilton led worship Tuesday afternoon with Belva Fuss as volunteer pianist. Volunteer Marg Cole organized several tables of friendly euchre competition Wednesday afternoon while another table of Scrabble enthusiasts played their favourite game. Thursday morning coffee and current events drew several residents for their weekly discussion of the news from the daily and weekly papers as well as' new items they've heard from radio and television. Some very insightful opinions are shared from a wealth of life experiences. Musician Bill Durst provided a rollicking evening of entertainment in the retirement home lounge for Friendship Friday. The clapping and singing along to the Al Jolsen tunes, and wide smiles of residents confirmed that all had a super time.
