First time pentathlon competitor places
third at Canadian .Winter Nationals
A Seaforth teen was one of
four young women from
Huron County competing
Jan. 29 and 30 with the
Huron Modern Pentathlon
club at the Canadian Winter
Nationals in Guelph.
In her first ever pentathlon
competition, Alina Shepherd,
of Seaforth, showed that with
more experience she too will
become a force in the sport,
says her coach Baird
Robinson.
She finished third in her
division at the
championships with 2,620
points and the best run of the
competition in any age class;
an impressive 11:11 for the
three kilometre run.
Comprised of athletes
from all corners of the
county, the Huron
pentathletes took the
competition by "storm."
The Modern Pentathlon is
usually contested over five
events including pistol
shooting, eve fencing,
swimming, horseback riding
and running.
The riding is not held during
winter events.
Athletes are awarded
points
based on pre -determined
standards.
Shepherd was one of two
new members of the Huron
club competing at the winter
nationals which included
Rachel Van Osch from
Kintail, Jen Schaerer from
Goderich and the second new
pentathletes, Melanie
McCann from Mount
Carmel.
Van Osch and Shepherd
competed in the Junior
category (under 21) while
McCann and Schaerer
participated in the Youth B
division (under 16).
The Huron pentathletes
demonstrated that they are
the future of the sport in
Canada as they dominated
the younger divisions.
Van Osch. last year's
Canadian under 16
champion, again displayed
her dominance as she jumped
two age divisions and cruised
to victory with 3.424 points
(4,000 points is considered
optimum).
McCann also had
impressive debut winning the
under 16 age division with
3,004 points. Her excellent
run and swim results allowed
her to overcome the more
experienced competitors in
Youth B.
Schaerer, last year's
provincial Youth C (under
14) shot and fenced well
finishing second in Youth B
to McCann with a score of
2,784 points.

Pentathlon club will be
