Nick Elligsen, of Walton, is top
defenseman for Welland Cougars
By Sara Campbell
Expositor Staff
As the top defenseman for the
Welland Cougars, Nick Elligsen is
working his way up to a professional
hockey career.
Elligsen, the son of John and Bonnie,
of the Walton area, began playing this
year for the Cougars, part of the Golden
Horseshoe Junior B Hockey League
(GHL).
"I just love the game and 1 guess I've
been fairly successful at it, so I'll
continue playing and doing the hest I
can," said Elligsen.
The 19 -year-old is attending Brock
University in St. Catharines where he is
enrolled in the four-year Physical
Education program.
"I chose to play for Welland because it
is close to the school I wanted to attend
and the Cougars are a really good, strong
team," he said.
Elligsen played minor hockey in
Seaforth for nine years before going on
to play for the Listowel Cyclones Jr. B
team. He also participated in the Ontario
Hockey Association Under -17 Camp.
"We were concerned that he wouldn't
be able to handle university and hockey
at the same time but he's doing great and
really enjoying it. We couldn't be
happier," said Bonnie, adding that they
are proud of their son's

accomplishments.
"He's far away though, so he can't
come home that often with games about
every weekend but we go there once in a
while to see him play."
The Cougars practise twice a week
with two or more games during the
week, Elligsen said, adding that he has
played in 34 of the 42 games this years
so far.
"We're having a fairly good year, the
team is in third place in our league and
we're just getting ready now for the
playoffs."
There are seven teams in league
including Fort Erie Meteors, Niagara
Falls Canucks, Port Colborne Sailors,
Stoney Creek Warriors, St. Catharines
Falcons, Thorold Blackhawks and
Welland.
"All the other teams in the league are
really close so there's not a lot of
travelling. It's a really nice area here
too," he said.
Elligsen was also named one of the
top players in the league to play for the
GHL All Stars against the United States
Empire Jr. B All Stars in early January.
The GHL All Stars won the game, 14 -
2.
Although Elligsen said he has one
more year left with the Jr. B team, he
hopes to play university hockey
afterwards and then "take whatever
comes next."
He added that his goal is to complete
university and then go on to become a
Physical Education teacher.
"I see myself playing university
hockey, hopefully for Brock," he said.
"I'll maybe play pro some day, if the
chance ever comes up, but I'll just wait
and see where I go."
