Huron Expositor, 2004-01-28, Page 131: Sports Archery club in need of new members By Sara Campbell Expositor Staff New and young members are needed to help keep the sport of archery and the 10 - year -old Seaforth Archery Club active. About a dozen people attended the first archery club gathering earlier this month but the number of those attending is dwindling, said Mary Barnes, who organizes the Seaforth Archery Club along with her husband, Jim. "The future of the sport is in the kids," said Mary. The Archery Club, which runs from the first weekend in January until mid-March, is held every, Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Seaforth Community Centre. Mary said when she first became involved in archery over 10 years ago there were more than 75 members at the local club. "Today, there are very few members and clubs around," she said. "It'sbeen said that the average archer only lasts three to five years. They just seem to lose interest but they're mainly hunters and in it for sport not competition," added Jim. The Seaforth club members range in age from seven to 70, and shooters come from Goderich, Mitchell, Exeter and the Seaforth area. "This club gives us some place to go and practises shooting during the winter months," she said, adding that because most club members are hunters, they would be hunting in April through to December. Although the club does not teach archery, Mary said members will assist children who join the club for the first time. Equipment is not necessarily required. The Barnes are both members of the Ontario Associations of Archers. They participate in competitions and tournaments throughout Ontario and have participated in the World Archery Competition in West Virginia, US., in 2000. Jim said in competitions there are different classes based on gender and age Sara Campbell photo Mary Barnes who organizes the Seaforth Archery Club with her husband Jim, gives an archery lesson to nine-year-old Tommy McGrath, of Seaforth, at a recent club gathering. She added classes are based on equipment — compound bow or crossbow — and use — freestyle or traditional. She said there is also a 3-D competition which involves a "foam -like” target that looks like a live animal. Jim added the Huron Fish and Game Club in Clinton has a 3-D practice area open to anyone interested. "At the competitions, it's usually the same people year after year or else it's people who left and then get back into it a few years later," said Jim. "The scores have gone up 30 - 40 points each year during the past few years because it is the same people coming back." . He said the cost for competitions or shooting fees are not expensive but the cost for equipment is increasing. The Seaforth club charges a small fee to cover the cost for the community centre or to replace targets, said Mary. Jim said he believes the arena advertisement for the local club may help to attract new members as they relied on "word-of-mouth" in the past. "It is a fun and easy sport to catch on to. So, we hope to see more young people come out," said Mary. For more information, call the Seaforth arena at 527- 1272.
