Cell phones banned from arenas
By Sara CampbdN
Expositor Staff
Recreation facility
managers in Huron East are
banning the use of cellular
phones in arenas and
recreation centres.
"Because of concerns with
cell phones that can take
digital photos, we are
banning cell phones from in
bathrooms, changes rooms
and locker rooms," said
Dale Lamont, Seaforth's
recreation facilities
manager.
Lamont said the ban on
cell phones came after a
iecent arena board meeting
where members' attention
was brought to an alert from
the Ontario Recreation
Facilities Association
(ORFA).
The alert states
"technology advances have
allowed people with cell
phones and personal digital
assistants to secretly
photograph objects in front
of them while appearing to
dial a number."
This has raised significant
concern for Members of
ORFA's Aquatic Committee
as "the potential exists for
deviant behaviours of
camera -phone users
photographing other patrons
undressing or showering in
locker rooms."
Lissa Berard, manager of
the Vanastra Recreation
Centre, said she is following
the alert's recommendation
to ban such devices by
posting signs on the
bathroom and change room
doors.
However, Lamont said he,
and other arena managers,
may ban the use of cell
phones in the entire facility
to avoid confusion and
conflict.
"So far, we have not heard
of any problems with
camera -phones locally but it
is an increasing concern at
urban facilities," said
Berard.
Lamont added that if any
one is aware or concerned
with someone improperly
using a camera -phone, they
should immediately contact
arena staff or police. ,
"We want to protect the
families and visitors who
use our facilities," said
Berard.
