But, Stanley Lambchop is only three feet tall and literally, paper thin. The Grade 2/3 class is part of the Flat Stanley Project (www.flatstanleyproject.com) with Flat Stanley (Lambchop), a fictional character from a series of books by Jeff Brown, that started 30 years ago. Teacher Colledn Scott said at the start oLthe school year, she introduced her students to Flat Stanley, the paper boy, giving him a desk to sit at and treating him as a any other student. "The students thought it was a' joke at first and thought it was unusual that he had a desk since he wasn't real," she said. "Then we starting reading the books and everyone wanted to take him home on an adventure or become his class buddy." In the first Flat Stanley book, it states, "After Stanley Lambchop is flattened by a bulletin board, he is able to travel through the mail in an envelope and visit his friend in California." The book later tells children how to make their own Flat Stanley out of paper and start a journal, recording adventures with him. Flat Stanley could then be mailed to a friend with a letter asking to write about his new adventures and to return him home. From there, Dale Hubert, of London, Ont., launched the Flat Stanley Project in 1995 for children and schools to send their own Flat Stanleys around the world with journals to share his adventures. "It really has taken off, more than what I thought it would," said Scott, of the class project. "Parents are really starting to enjoy it too and asking me when Stanley will visit their house next." She said each of the 24 students are allowed to take Flat Stanley home for two to seven days, treating him as family guest and taking him to any outings. Students journal what they did with Flat Stanley over that period of time and include pictures, then return him to class for the next student, she said. Scott said she started the journal for the class in the summer while she traveled to Prince Edward Island and visited Ottawa, taking Flat Stanley along with her. Student Jake Cronin, who traveled to Mexico with his family during the Christmas holidays wrote in the diary on Dec. 23, "All of us (including Stanley) went shopping in Progresso, Mexico. It was 17 degrees and windy. We walked up and down the streets to shop. The streets were very busy." "When I got home, I went to piano with Stanley. Stanley even played the piano. Stanley was a good player just like me," said Christine White, of her time with Stanley in early December. "Wednesday was our last full day in Myrtle Beach. Mom and my aunts went shopping in the morning and dad took us to the beach. Sara Campbell photo Flat Stanley, a fictional character from a series of books, is treated like any other student in the Grade 2/3 class (below) at St. Patrick's School in Dublin and is taken on adventures with each student. (Above) Student Jake Cronin, stands on the beach with Flat Stanley in Mexico during a family trip over the Christmas holidays. Stanley and I found a sea urchin." stated Isabelle Cronin, of her trip with Stanley and her family during the Christmas holidays. Samantha Feeney wrote on Nov. 18, "With Stanley, we played X and O's. Stanley thought it was fun. We dressed Stanley up in my little brother's clothes and Stanley thought it was funny. Tonight he is sleeping in my sister's bed, it will be fun." Scott said the students will soon be making their own Flat Stanley's to mail to students in another school also working on the project. She added that they have already received a Flat Stanley from a student in Thunder Bay that will be sent back with a response including his adventures at the school. "The project is really helping their creative writing skills as they write their experiences with Stanley in the diary," said Scott. "It's like a different kind of pen pal that the students can share and enjoy." Prinicipals looking, forward to completion of library renovations By Sora CampbdN Exposttor Staff Students at two area schools will soon be able to use their libraries for the first time this school year. St. Columban School and St. Patrick's in Kinkora have been part of a library revitalization program by the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board which would see six schools within the 'board benefit from a renovated library. "This is a major project for our school and by the board. We're really looking forward to stepping into the new library soon," said Anne Sutton, principal of St Columban and St Patrick's Schools in Dublin. "The contractors who are renovating the libraries for the board have been busy working between all six schools but it will be nice to see the construction come to an end." Sutton said the libraries were expected to be completed in November but the date was later changed to the end of January. "The project has taken a while but once the library is done, it's going to be beautiful," said Principal Joe MacDonald, of St. Patrick's School in Kinkora. "We're very grateful to hoard for their support and helping to make this possible." The board's library project included research into "best management practices" for the school libraries as well as an examination of which types of books are must - haves for elementary school libraries and a study of how the hook collections in school libraries might be updated. As well, two full-time and two part-time library technicians, who will split time between the six schools, were hired by the board. McDonald said each school is receiving more than $50,000 worth of renovations and supplies thanks to the board's surplus budget last year and a provincial grant. He said most of the schools will receive 4,000 to 5,000 new books, new furniture and new computers, with St. Patrick's expecting 15 new computers to replace their older mobiles. St. Columban replaced their older mobiles last summer when the recieved 13 new computers. Sutton said that the schools will also each receive new computerized library catalogue systems as found in public libraries. She added that St. Patrick' s in Dulbin may he part of library revitalization prbgram during the next school year along with other elementary schools in the board. 'Literacy is A Major priority for the board and what a better way to show that then starting at the libraries," said McDonald.
