By a margin of only 16
votes, Joe Seili beat Robin
Dunbar for the position of
Huron East's mayor 1,165 to
1,149 during Monday's
municipal election. Because
Robin Dunbar listened for
election results from CKNX
Radio, which mistakenly
reported that he had won the
election, he was disappointed
to learn from a call from the
Huron Expositor that he had
not won.
Despite the United States
Senate saying it's too soon to
consider letting Canada send
live cattle to the U.S.,
presidents of the Huron County
Cattlemen Association and
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture believe the borders
will open in January. The U.S.
Department of Agriculture
announced on Oct. 31, a
proposal to relax bans on cattle
under 30 -months -old and
lambs 12 -months -old, thought
to be at lower risk for BSE, as

Broken and uprooted trees,
along with damaged signs and
blown -off shingles caused "all
kinds of clean-up" for Huron
East's public works department
after last Thursday's storm,
says Public Works Coordinator
John Forrest.
For the first time for a year
and a `half, all low water
advisories for the Ausable,

Joe Seili is still Huron East's
new mayor but the 16 -vote gap
between him and losing
candidate Robin Dunbar
widened by one vote after a
recount was held last Thursday
at town hall. The total
remained at 1,165 for Seili but
changed to 1,148 from the
original 1,149 for Dunbar,
creating a 17 -vote spread after
the recount.
This winter's flu season
could be a nasty one and the
Huron County Health Unit is
urging residents to get their flu
shot as soon as possible. But, at
the same time that a
particularly serious strain of flu
called "A Fujian" has arrived,
health unit officials are
concemed that attendance at flu
shot clinics at Huron schools is
at its lowest level since the
shots began being offered at
schools three years ago.

Vanderweg left home Saturday
morning with the intention of
buying Juliet Public School in
Stratford which was auctioned
for $650,000. But, he came

$110,000 was lower than the

$200,000, which was not
revealed at the sale, but.

and bought the building.
It's time for damage control.

consultant to "put a positive
spin" on the 1<,ake Huron

Huron County farmers with

asked to help contribute to the
Donate -a -Cow program that

Huron East council agreed at
its Dec. 16 meeting to pay up
to $6,500 for engineers to
investigate the costs of joining
the Exeter pipeline project.

wondered if Seaforth will be
able to afford anticipated costs
of $20 million, others said it
was worth the $6,500 to
explore the option.

is always a significant
milestone for any parent, Doug
and Stephanie Hugill have
been celebrating their daughter
Alexa's Christmas Day
birthday for several weeks
now. Because she was born
with a serious congenital heart
defect that required open heart
surgery and close to a month's
stay at Sick Kids' Hospital in
Toronto, Alexa's first birthday
is being celebrated many times
this month.

Huron County farmers say
the recent announcement of a
single case of bovine
spongiform encephalopathy
(BSE) in the United States
comes as no surprise. However,
what did come as a surprise to
area farmers was that the
Americans were quick at
pointing the blame for the
infected cow on Canada.
Influenza A is in Seaforth,
with eight confirmed cases at
the Seaforth Manor and many
unconfirmed cases using the
Seaforth hospital emergency
department over the Christmas
holidays.
