July 30, 2003 More than 500 Seaforth-area residents rallied behind Huron County beef producers and enjoyed a beef barbecue Friday night. Three hundred pounds of beef was cooked for the dinner - which was part of Seaforth's July 25 Moonlight Madness celebrations While West Nile virus has still not been detected in humans, horses or mosquitoes in Huron County, the first crow to test positive for WNV was found on July 4, reports the Huron County Health Unit. The crow was picked up northeast of Bayfield. Aug. 6, 2003 When Hensall-area farmer Ery Willert went into his 16 - hectare wheat field to inspect something with his combine operator last week, they noticed a strange formation. Willert checked out the formation of four circles by immediatley calling the Canadian Corn Crop Circle Research Network who later reported this was indeed a legitable crop circle. Community Care Access Centre for Huron will be the tenants of a new building the Seaforth community development trust is planning to erect behind the Seaforth medical clinic. Aug. 13, 2003 The United States has lifted a small part of its ban on Canadian beef imports and that is called a good first step by Neil Vincent, president of the Heron Federation of Agriculture. The U.S. has still not lifted its ban on the sale of live Canadian beef cattlebut `low-risk' Canadian beef products could be imported to the United States. Huron County may be becoming a "hot spot" for crop circles after a second crop circle near Cranbrook was declared authentic, says Joanna Emery of the Canadian Crop Circle Research Network. Emery visited the Cranbrook crop circle Friday morning, located in a mixed grain field on the farm of Steve Knight at the corner of St. Michael's Road and McNabb Line. Aug. 20, 2003 "You never really know how much you rely on electricity until you lose it," said Seaforth Shell manager Lisa Todd as she faced block -long line ups of anxious customers at her Goderich Street gas station after an Ontario -wide blackout, starting at 4 p.m. Thursday, left TNI HURON EXPOSITOR,, JANUARY 14, 2004-3 LOWER MONTHLY PAYMENTS 1st & 2nd Mortgages $25,000. - $190.80/mth $50,000. - $381.61/mth $100,000. - $763.21/mth Call 1-866.667.5643 Far.Mor Mortgage Funding Mortgagee Bought, Sold McTaggart Wettlaufer INSURANCE BROKERS INC. Huron East's power was restored for the first time around 2 a.m. However, the power went out again almost six hours later. Local doctors, nurses and hospital staff are breathing a sigh of relief today, knowing they made it through another Walton's TransCan Grand Nationals. "It's the most exhausting day of the. year. Everyone's working overtime" said Dr. Dan Rooyakkers. More than 900 riders from across Canada and the United States will be competing at the 12th annual Walton event. Aug. 27, 2003 While Seaforth and area Catholics are being encouraged to sign a petition against same- sex marriage legislation and send it to their MPs, other local churches have not had time to develop a policy on the issue. One week after last Thursday's province -wide blackout, residents of Seaforth, Harpurhey, Egmondville, Brussels and McKillop were out of power again Thursday. from a violent storm that knocked over trees and power lines throughout the region. A second - and possibly a third - crop circle has been reported in the Cranbrook area. And, despite reports from unnamed "amateur researchers from Waterloo" in last week's edition of The Citizen that the second crop circle is a hoax, a Canadian Crop Circle Research Network researcher claims it's the real thing. Close to 2,000 people turned up at the Brussels, Moms and Grey Community Centre on Aug. 20 to show their support for the beef industry, during the export ban on Canadian cattle was only logical, says organizer Cathy Cardiff. Sept. 3, 2003 "Shocked" by their minister's comments regarding same-sex marriage in a recent Huron Expositor article, First Presbyterian Church congregation members held an "emergency meeting" last Thursday night. Although the church, as a denomination, had not yet made its official statement regarding same-sex marriages, Rev. Nick Vandermey told the Expositor staff he believes there is a "legitimate argument to support the side of same-sex marriages.", Sept. 10, 2003 Dick Burgess announced his plans to seek a second term as Seaforth councillor. Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan and McKillop Coun. Ferg Kelly recently filed their nomination papers. Seaforth Coun. Bill Teall, Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan and Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath said they intend to run again, but haven't had a chance to file their papers. McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure, Tuckersmith Coun. Bill deJong and Brussels councillors Joe Seili and Greg Wilson said they were still undecided. Robin Dunbar is trying a second time to become Huron East's mayor. Lou Maloney is also hoping to represent his hometown. A new Huron County smoking bylaw is expected to come into affect Sept. 4, 2004. During its third trip to county council, on Sept. 4, the new smoking bylaw - with exemptions - met the approval of all council members and will now go back to the lower -tier municipalities for final approval. Sept. 17, 2003 Calling her one of the best cabinet ministers in Ontario, Premier Ernie Eves used a campaign stop in Goderich last Saturday to defend Minister of Agriculture and Food and Huron -Bruce MPP Helen Johns. During a string of hot summery days, Seaforth's 158th fall fair attracted better than average crowds, says Seaforth Agricultural Society president John Bennett. With the 15th year of free admission, secretary -treasurer Sharon Flanagan said there's no way to know the exact attendance but added most of the events were successful. Huron -Bruce Liberal candidate Carol Mitchell expressed concern on Monday that local voters won't be given a chance to hear a full debate of all the issues. And, she's blaming incumbent PC Agriculture Minister Helen Johns, who requested to use a stand-in at an all -candidates meeting in Chepstow, for the reason more all -candidates meetings aren't being held. All rights reserved.) "Packaging" is a buzzword in the travel tourism industry. Packaging involves bundling a number of services. amenities, features and benefits into one attractively priced, added value. often all-inclusive. parcel. The idca is that consumers. instead of being confronted by a bewildering array of A la carte choices and options, simply have to decide which package best suits their needs. The packaging approach is exemplified in thc auto industry, where some manufacturers group items for one price that others offer only as a daunting list of options. Packaging is also prevalent at travel agencies. where one price can cover thc cost of inclusive cruise, resort and tour vacations, that include airfare. transfers, ground transportation. lodging. meals, guides and evcn drinks. One-stop shopping and you•know exactly what the cost of your getaway will be up front! The packaging approach is a considerably different head space than sim- ply taking off for a tour on your own and making arrangements on the go. Yet isn't this what many touring snowmobilers actually do? 'They pick a starting point and ride off into the great unknown for their week or ten days of winter bliss without much prior planning. For them it's part of the fun, enhances the adventure and is essential to the rugged individualism, pio- neering spirit and freedom of choice that many snowmobilers value. Yet even as do-it-yourselfers, they depend on trail maps, good signage, tour books, snow shows and hospitality advertising for thc information needed to find their way. However. a growing number of riders are leaning toward a morc pack- aged experience. Some appreciate the case or affordability that packages have brought to other areas of their lives. Others want thc certainty, com- fort level and pampering that can accompany a good snowmobiling pack- agc. And others simply want to have as much fun as possible, with the fewest hassles or surprises. Certainly. for snowmobilers visiting an area for the first time. packaging offers peace of mind from fears Tike getting lost, not having a good place to stay (or any place at all). finding fuel or getting help in the event of a break down or incident. Four kinds of snowmobiling packages have emerged, and each has its fans. The ultimate is paying a preset, mostly inclusive price for a specific tour run by a company that makes all arrangements. provides guides and even a support vehicle and sled rentals. A fully guided tour is an excellent way to experience a new arca for the first time and allows larger groups with differing experience levels to tour easily (many companies will break a larger tour into daily groups of riders with similar abilities or interests). Another way to take advantage of a package is by riding a tour route established by local clubs and tourism operators. Often these tours are namcd and self -guided, consisting of a specific loop, with participating hospitality establishments clearly indicated. In some cases, a call to a cen- tral number can result in reservations for each night of the tour. Many individual accommodation operators also offer packages for those who identify themselves as snowmobilers. 'typically, these deals include a room, along with dinner and breakfast the next morning, but sometimes there's only a special room rate for sledders. A fourth package option involves a hotel chain that offers special snowmobiler rates in all its prop- erties. Whatever your preference. always ask for the snowmobiler's rate when booking your lodgings — and remember, weekdays and later in March you should be able to score better deals. For more information, call 1-800 ONTARIO or click on www.ontariotravel.net, then click on Winter and Snowmobiling. Until ncxt time remember that snowmobilers care about the environment too.
