pass a smoke-free bylaw.

8 vote by county council a
victory.
Icy hydro lines and high
winds caused power outages
for short periods of time in
Seaforth and area both on
Friday and Monday. An hour-
long power outage in
Seaforth over the lunch hour
and then another outage at 3
p.m. for 20 minutes were the
only inconvenience.
Seaforth's councillors want
policing costs to be divided
evenly by Huron East's wards
and are prepared to invoke a
dispute resolution that would
bring a mediator or arbitrator
into the debate.

amending the amendment, a
tentative agreement has been
reached between the Avon
Maitland District School
Board and its • elementary
school teachers. If ratified,
the deal would run through
Aug. 31, 2003.
The Seaforth Cooperative
Children's Centre got half of
its request for $20,000 from
Huron East. Council defeated
a motion to grant the daycare
$12,700 but then approved a
Kim Souch and her daughter Sara Sobey, of Egmondville, raised money for autism with a CD
they created for an Autism Society Ontario project last spring.
$10,000 grant towards the
costs of moving from Market
Street to Chalk Street.
The Seaforth Business
Improvement Area (BIA)
wants to partner with the
Huron OPP to get community
policing going in Seaforth,

Mayor Lin Steffler told
Huron East councillors she
will not seek re-election this
fall before blasting them for
their recent "Grade 1"
behaviour. "If it was within
my power and it was still.
socially acceptable, .there are
people sitting in this room
tonight that I could quite
cheerfully take out behind the
woodshed and give a damn
good lickin' to," she told
council.
The preferred option by
American Water Services to
solve Seaforth's water
problems, at least in the short
term, will cost about $1.5
million, Jim Lunn told about
10 people who attended a
public meeting at town hall.
After attending a Green
Party of Ontario meeting in
Stratford this spring, Shelley
Hannah, of Seaforth,
discovered that if she wanted
to vote for the party in the
next provincial election, she'd
have to find a candidate to
run in Huron -Bruce. And,
since organizing an
introductory meeting in
Goderich to begin a local
constituency for the Green
Party, Hannah has herself
become the candidate.

autistic daughter Sara before
she learned to speak, the two
are joining a summer
fundraising project of Autism
Society Ontario by providing
the theme song. Kaleidoscope
Ride, that will follow two
men who are cycling across
Huron East council passed a two per cent
raise in its general levy in May of 2003

interested in a municipal
heritage tax credit. presented
a draft proposal along with
committee member Ken
Cardno.

Year in Review, 2003
Seaforth Cooperative Children's Centre, said daycare
president Lauren Rooyakkers. But, the board's media
relations person Steve Howe says some legal, financial and
servicing issues have to be dealt with before the donation is
official.
Even though the budget was balanced without it. Huron
East council voted to raise the general taxlevy by two per
cent as it passed the 2003 budget, after council shaved
$25,000 off of the economic development budget.
In an attempt "to avoid having to go through some extra
hoops," Seaforth Coun. Dick Burgess asked if Huron East's
official plan could rezone the agricultural land behind the
hospital as industrial as part of council's discussions about a
new official plan.
About 130 property ownersin Hensall had their heads filled
with facts and figures on potential local water improvement
projects by the Municipality of Bluewater, and engineers
Steve Burns and Ken Logtenberg from B. M. Ross and
Associates of Goderich, and after three hours, they asked for
a delay in their decision.

It's now in the hands of the nine lower -tier municipalities to
decide whether or not to vote in favour of a smoking bylaw
for the county. A majority of lower -tier municipalities must
vote in favour of the bylaw before it becomes law. Huron
County councillors passed a smoking bylaw on May 8, to
take effect in one year.
When a group of Bayfield -arca residents got together two
years ago td determine why their beach was being closed so
often because of high bacteria readings, they began testing
water in the Bayfield River.

When Dean Cruikshank dips his bicycle tire in Seaforth's
SilvepCreck to begin a 5,000 -kilometre trip to Newfoundland
on his 40th birthday next week, he'll be celebrating the close
to 35 years he was not expected to live as a child with cystic
fibrosis.
While SARS screening has been lifted for hospital staff,
outpatients and visitors, a "new normal" will incorporate the
screening tool into the procedure for admitting patients both
at the emergency department and into the hospital, says Mary
Cardinal. site leader for Seaforth Community Hospital.
Huron East staff will be looking throughout the
municipality to get rid of any mosquito breeding areas in an
attempt to prevent the local spread of West Nile virus,
Administrator Jack McLachlan told council.
While Huron East council agreed on the need for a "frank
discussion" about Tuckersmith Day Nursery and its ongoing
deficit, it will hold the meeting behind closed doors.

Neil Dolmage's old Charolais cow, Richesse, won a good
number of championships at cattle shows in her day. But,
when the time came to go to market last Tuesday at the
Brussels livestock yard, Richelle was one of 200 cows to be
returned to their owners after a scare about an Alberta cow
with mad cow disease stopped the sale mid -way through the
day when the border to the U.S. closed to beef.
Huron East will not be able to take advantage of hybrid
policing.In answer to Mayor Lin Steffler's opening question
of whether or not Huron East could contract for one level of
policing for Seaforth and another level for the surrounding
rural areas, Sgt. Harry de Wolde said no.
A bus tour of more than 50 people will be making a brief
stop at the Harpurhey Cairn this Saturday as part of the
rededication ceremony of the Hick's Cairn in Mitchell.
