In House at Centralia suffered
death in a railway accident between
Winnipeg and Sudbury on, Thursday
morning of last week following a
rear -end collision of two Q. N. R.

also of Centralia, who was travel-
ling with Moffatt, had a miraculous
escape having conte through without
a scratch, Mr. Hicks and 1VTr. Mof-
fatt had gone to Winnipeg the pre-
vious week to purchase some western.

smashing the rear,coaeih and caboose.
There were eight risen travelling on
the train at tine time find the car in
which they • were .riding telescoped.
Three of the hien escaped. ,The
ether five were pinned beneath the
wreckage and were burned to death
whenthe coaches took .fire, Mr.
Hicks was sitting With Mr. Moffatt
just a moment before. He had aris-
en and moved to : the Seat ahead for
the purpose of reading a paper and
he was adjusting his specticles to his
nose when the crash carne. He was
thrown beneath the • seats but was
unhurt and made his Way to the front
of the coach but was unable to open
the door. He again went to the
rear and after. scrambling out
searched for hers friend Moffatt who
had been pinned beneath the wreck-
age. Eire broke out immediately
and- when finally Mr. Moffatt's body
was discovered,•;it had been burned
to the waist and efforts at rescue
were of no avail. Of the five reel
who lost their lives 'vary little of
their remains were left when the fire
had died out. Beer. Hicks arrived
home Saturday • evening.
Mr. Moffatt was widely' known
having conducted a hotel at Cen-
tralia for many, years. In addition
to. the -hotel business he was also a
farmer and cattle drover. He was
about sixty years o3 age and a'
bachelor. -

Tuesday afternoon, the chef speak-
er being Hon,, W. E. Raney, Progres-
sive leader. Mr. Raney said. that
Mr, re •guson does not speak ior
the Conservative pasty on. Isis tem-

Ferguson was going to give the pro-
vince a liquor policy that would suit
everyone, but noon'e knew what that:

years the O_T.A., had �begn adminis-

and good progress was being made.
There had been'a great cliniinution
of drunkenness, crime and poverty.
During his administration he had
a distinct advantage over Mr.'`Nickle
He had the whole -hearted support of
the 'cabinet. - No men were cutting
the ground from under his .feet.
At a gathering of, hotelmen he
had complimented them on the few
violations of the O.T.A. but now a
great many hotel -keepers were boot
Iegeing because they were encour-

0,T.., had done much good. He
went on to suggest some amend-
lnetfts that; ecould strengthen the 0.

a supervisor over each liquor store

tlon free and where doctor's pers-
criptions would be honored but a
check-up would be made if too many
"Pers were iesued. The greatest
source of bootleg whisky was the
distillers and brewers. For two
generations we have been going on
the _assumption that the' province
had no jurisdiction over the distil-
lers and, ,brewers but recent court
decisions had pointed to the con-
trary and he favored getting a de-
cision from the courts and then
amend the act to prohibit'the manu-
facture. ^: a
Mr. Medd gave •a, short address as
did also Mr. McKenzie,. candidate in
South Perth. Dr. Coyne, of Toron-
to, also delivered a very impassion -
ate address.
James More, of Blausliar•d, at one
time councillor and reeve of the
Township died on Thursday of last
week, and ,a largely attended funer-
al was held Monday.
Mrs.. Thos. Pryde, who recently
underwent an operation for appendi-
citis at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lon-
don, returned home last week anal is
at present getting along nicely..
The names of the Veterans who
contributed toward the wreaths for
the War Memorial will be publish-
ed next week.
