Medd, . e , 1 i ogressve candidate tai South Huron, was held to. a eapacftY house in the Town Hall, Exeter, Tuesday afternoon, the chef speak- er being Hon,, W. E. Raney, Progres- sive leader. Mr. Raney said. that Mr, re •guson does not speak ior the Conservative pasty on. Isis tem- perance policy*. For foltr years Mr. Ferguson was going to give the pro- vince a liquor policy that would suit everyone, but noon'e knew what that: policy was s but lir Y l nselP For seven years the O_T.A., had begn adminis- tered under s two at'torner_generale and good progress was being made. There had been'a great cliniinution of drunkenness, crime and poverty. During his administration he had a distinct advantage over Mr.'`Nickle He had the whole -hearted support of the 'cabinet. - No men were cutting the ground from under his .feet. At a gathering of, hotelmen he had complimented them on the few violations of the O.T.A. but now a great many hotel -keepers were boot Iegeing because they were encour- aged, The speaker read from a let- ter he had written and from a'I sr .til of Mr. Ferguson where' the 0,T.., had done much good. He went on to suggest some amend- lnetfts that; ecould strengthen the 0. T.A. Qne was the sppointmellt of a supervisor over each liquor store where anyone could get a l erserip- tlon free and where doctor's pers- criptions would be honored but a check-up would be made if too many "Pers were iesued. The greatest source of bootleg whisky was the distillers and brewers. For two generations we have been going on the _assumption that the' province had no jurisdiction over the distil- lers and, ,brewers but recent court decisions had pointed to the con- trary and he favored getting a de- cision from the courts and then amend the act to prohibit'the manu- facture. ^: a Mr. Medd gave •a, short address as did also Mr. McKenzie,. candidate in South Perth.
