Local youth led successful hockey camp
By Sara CampbeN
Expositor Staff
Children in the Seaforth
and surrounding area were
kept busy and in shape
over the Christmas
holidays.
More than 60 children
participated in the Hockey
Skills Camp from Dec. 22-
24 at the Seaforth arena,
part of the Huron East
Recreation Department's
Kids' Christmas Programs.
"We thought there would
be probably around 40 kids
at the most. But, the more
kids the better," said Luke
Vick, of Seaforth, who led
the program along with
Leah Craig,. of
Egmondville.
"There were more kids
that what was expected but
they're really having a
good time," said Craig, a
member of, the Bluewater
Junior Hawks.
Craig has also played for
Team Ontario (which were
national champions last
year), the London Junior
Stangs and for Seaforth
minor hockey.
The program for
children, ages 6-13,
included power skating,
stick skills and puck
control, shooting, off -ice
activities and a hockey
game to conclude the
camp.
"A lot of the kids have
played in minor hockey,"
she said. "They're really
into the camp and taking it
very seriously."
Craig said she has helped
with other hockey camps
through the summer but
has never led a camp
before.
"It's challenging to work
with kids that are not much
younger than you, but
they're listening to us and
staying focussed," she
said.
She added that she and
Vick met several times
before the camp to prepare
a schedule and plan daily
drills.
"Parents didn'tpay $60
for their kids to fool
around so we had lots
planned," said Vick.
"We were a little slow
starting off. It's difficult to
get the kids motivated in
the morning but they're
having fun now."
He said he participated
in and assisted with the
Dave McLlwain Hockey
School in previous years
but leading a camp was
also a new experience for
Vick.
"It has been challenging
to throw together but it's
easy to pick up on drills
and remember the ones you
like the most from over the
years in hockey," said
Vick. "A lot of the drills
we're teaching are from
the Dave McLlwain
Hockey School."
Vick has also played
with the St. Marys Jr. B
Lincolns, the St. Marys Jr.
B Mid West AAA team and
in Seaforth minor hockey.
Craig said they were
thankful to have over 10
assistants with the hockey
camp.
They include Mallory
Johnston, of Chatham and
a member of the Bluewater
Junior Hawks, Cal
O'Reilly, of Seaforth and
the Windsor Spitfires
(OHL) and Derek Nesbitt,
of Egmondville and Ferris
State University.
Teaching goalie skills
was Matt Dalton, of
Seaforth and goalie with
the St. Marys Jr. B
Lincolns.
"All of these guys are
working great together and
as a team.The children
have been really been
enjoying it and the parents
have been most impressed.
I couldn't be happier with
the way the program has
been running," said
organizer Kathy Huether, a
member of the Seaforth
arena staff.
Huether added that she
hopes to run the camp
again next year.
"Our goal is to keep the
kids in shape over the
Christmas holiday and
teach them things they may
have never learned
before," said Vick. "I hope
we gave them a worthwhile
experience to remember."
