"We have eight confirmed cases of influenza A in the retirement home but the nursing home has not been affected," said Cathie Schalk, Seaforth Manor administrator, on Monday. Schalk said the retirement home is now closed to visitors but the nursing home is operating at regular hours. Visitors are allowed but must wash their hands before entering the facility. "We're recommending that anyone who has or believes they may have symptoms, to stay at home," she said. Queensway Retirement and Nursing Home in Hensall reopened the retirement home to visitors on Monday after being closed for a week because of one case of influenza A. The facility continues to remind visitors to wash their hands before entering the facility. Maplewood Manor Retirement Residence in Seaforth has reported that none of their residents have been affected by influenza but they are also taking precautions to protect their residents. As well, Mary Cardinal, site leader of the Seaforth Community Hospital, said that despite a run on the emergency department over the Christmas holidays by people with flu symptoms, the hospital has not admitted any patients with influenza A. "The emergency ward has been very busy with people with flu-like symptoms over the Christmas holidays because the clinic has been closed for the past week," said Cardinal.. "We have been very fortunate though that there has not been an outbreak here." She added that anyone with flu-like symptoms should stay at home and avoid visiting the hospital patients. Huron County's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Beth Henning says Huron County is in the midst of a county -wide outbreak of influenza A. "It's no longer a good indicator to communities of the number of individual cases. Once it's here, it's here and we are now monitoring cases at long- term care facilities," said Henning. A week ago, a total of 13 cases of influenza A had been confirmed in the county. Before the Christmas break, many schools were seeing above normal absenteeism percentages. Avon Maitland District School Board manager of communications Steve Howe said last week that the issue was "a crap shoot across the system." "It's all over the map," he said. "Some schools are seeing above average percentages, while others are normal. There's no real consistency." Percentages have varied across in the board, going as high as 20 per cent at Huron Centennial in Brucefield (which also involves chicken pox) and 10 per cent in Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. When 10 per cent of a school's students are absent, principals are required to contact the health unit. "Do not give aspirin or medicines containing salicylates to children or adolescents with flu or fever. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen instedd," stated Dr. Henning, in a press release. "Call your doctor if your child has a high fever that does not respond to fever medications, lasts longer than three -five days or keeps corning back. Also, if your child has difficulty breathing or is breathing fast and hard or is unable to drink, contact your doctor." As well, Henning recommended those who are sick to stay at home and not visit friends or relatives in hospitals, long-term care facilities or holiday gatherings. "It's pretty general right now," said Laura Farrell, of the Huron County Health Unit. "There seems to be a range of ages affected, spanning from kids to the elderly. There hasn't been a specific age group targeted." According to Farrell, a public health inspector on the health unit's communicable disease team, more than five extra flu shot clinics were held this year. As of Dec. 15, 717 individuals received their flu shot at the health unit. A total of 2,621 students received flu shots. at school- based clinics since Dec. 12. Last year 1,986 flu shots were given at community clinics that were offered by the Huron County Health Unit throughout the county. Those numbers do not include those who got the flu shot from their doctor, from a pharmacy -based flu shot clinic, from workplace flu shot clinics, or from clinics hosted by local hospitals or community health centres. But it's not too late to get a flu shot this year. Farrell said while no additional clinics are planned for this year, people can still get vaccinations from their family doctors or during intake sessions 1:15 - 4 p.m. at the health unit. "Ideally, everyone should have their shot by now because the flu is here," added senior public health promoter Linda Stobo. "However, there's still time." Huron County 4-H Club members recognized for achievements Dozens of proud parents and family members gathered at the Central Huron Secondary School auditorium recently to pay tribute to members of the Huron County 4-H Club. The afternoon's list of events featured special guest Lillian Penhale, who is the only living member of Canada's first 4-H Club. Penhale, who joined the first- ever 4-H Club in Manitoba in 1913 and now lives in Bayfield, says it is an honour to be connected to such a worthwhile organization. "I've had a wonderful life," says Penhale, who accepted a bouquet of flowers from 4-H members Nicole Moore and Tonya Drost. "Thank you very much." Pat Saundercock, president of the 4-H club, was the master of ceremonies for the event, which featured the presentation of numerous awards, honours and gifts for club members in Huron County. Tonya Drost, a 17 -year-old student at Central Huron Secondary School, took home the Murray Cardiff Citizenship Award as the top all-round member for the Huron County 4-H Club.
