The Canadian Half Pints educated and entertained students at St. James School in Seaforth on Dec. 19 with their "Don't Tease" presentation and display of their basketball skills. "We want to prove to each and every person that we can do anything," said 'PeeWee' John Hayward, a member of the Half Pints. Hayward along with Chris Ryekall and Mourtour 'Ali', who brought their message to St. James School, all have a form of dwarfism, a rare genetic disorder. "Their arms and legs are shorter than other people's but they're no different than anyone else," said `Coach' Rusty Cole, a motivational speaker with the Half Pints, adding that one in every 10,000 people has dwarfism. "Someone might have different coloured skin or wear glasses but they could i be a friend," said Cole. "We sure hope that anyone you think about teasing that you just spend half a day with them and you'll see you can make a friendship you may have never had." The Half Pints visit three to four schools or arenas a day across North America, promoting the Don't Tease Program by sharing with the students the harmful effects of teasing and making people and groups feel like outcasts. The team has played over 10,000 basketball games against students, teachers, parents or NBA players and have won all but 11. "We play basketball because it is a very difficult sport for someone of our size to play," said Hayward. Cole said that often, people with dwarfism are inappropriately called midgets but an acceptable name would be dwarves or little people. "I get laughed at and I get called names and as a little kid I had a hard time dealing with teasing that I would take my anger out on others," said Hayward. "It wasn't until I joined this team that I discovered myself and changed my attitude and that's what everybody needs to do." Cole said several years ago, a friend of his with dwarfism was shoved into a school locker upside down by some students who thought it would be funny to be. He said it wasn't until a few hours later ames Sara Campbell photo The Canadian Half Pints gave their "Don't Tease" presentation and displayed their basketball skills to students at St. James School on Dec. 19. The Half Pints challenge students and teachers to a game as well as demonstrated the affects of teasing by putting a pie in Grade 8 teacher Todd Chisholm's face - all in fun, of course. • Happy 35th Anniversary Edith & Laurence Taylor December 28 THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 24, 2003-15 Brodhagen Chamber of Commerce POKER RALLY Sat., Jan. 3, 2004 Rain Date Feb. 7, 2004 WEDDINGS Performed - your location or our indoor or outdoor chapel (non -denominational). "This could have been prevented but no one had the courage to stop it. It's because of insecure people who aren't sure who they bully others." Cole added that it take great strength and courage for people with dwarfism to finish school or they dropped out as a result of teasing. "Dropping out is not acceptable but it's because of friendships that these guys were able to get back on their feet," he said.
