Pipeline to Seaforth could cost as much as $20 million
Councillors argue pipeline costs need to be explored as possible second water source for Seaforth
From Pogo 1
getting lake water, now would
be the best time to look at it.
Once the pipe to Exeter gets
built, it will be difficult to
expand its capacity and
service area. Seaforth is about
18 kilometres beyond Hensall
which is within the scale of
several pipeline projects now
being considered," says the e-
mail.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler
agreed that the municipality
has to look at alternatives to
operating off of one well.
"What if we can't get the
water cleaned up?" he asked.
Maloney began arguing that
money spent on engineering
fees to explore the costs of
joining the pipeline would be
"money thrown away,"
guessing that it might cost as
much as $20 million for
Seaforth to join the pipeline.
"It'll cost Exeter $11
million just to bring the water
there. If the pipe has to be
bigger to get the water from
Exeter to Hensall and
Seaforth, it's double the price
and that gets awful
expensive," he said.
But, Maloney finally
agreed with arguments that
looking at the possibility of a
pipeline is something that
needs to be done now.
"We have to do it now or
not at all. I agree with that,"
he said.
Seaforth's signs should include
Huron East, says deputy -mayor
•
Seaforth's entrance signs should be
changed to feature "Huron East" the way
signs across the municipality have been
changed, Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
said at council's Dec. 9 meeting.
MacLellan made the comment after a
recommendation was made by Public Works
Coordinator John Forrest to replace the
existing signs, which are both falling apart.
"It's my personal opinion that you're going
to want the same kind of sign as they have
everywhere else," he said.
If they are worded like the signs at other
communities within Huron East, the new
Seaforth signs would be worded, "Welcome
tp Seaforth, A Proud Community Within
Huron East."
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler asked if the
•
signs could remain the same if the Seaforth
trust, rather than the municipality of Huron
East, paid for the construction of two new
signs.
"Would there be a problem if the trust just
went ahead with this?" he asked.
MacLellan responded that council would
have to agree and there would have to be no
financial burden on the municipality.
In 1990,. the signs at the north and south
entrance of Seaforth were installed for
$13,469. Forrest's report said the Nov. 13
windstorm blew down most of the north sign
and that the south sign is falling apart.
Council passed a motion to make
Seaforth's signs the same as in other Huron
East communities.

Tuckersmith Coun. Larry
McGrath agreed with
Maloney's point that the
pipeline option is too
expensive.
"Maybe we should go to
the government to pay for this
study. We have radon in the
water that the government has
no standard on and we could
spend and spend on
regulations that could change
everyday. What happens
when nobody can reach the
standards? Are they going to
shut us all down?" asked

McGrath.
"We haven't got $20
million. I don't know who's
going to pay for it? No one's
building pipelines for free,"
he said.
McGrath asked if Huron
East is lobbying the province
yet for funding.
"Should we be bombarding
(Huron -Bruce MPP) Carol
Mitchell? We've got to start
leaning on her," he said.
South Huron council voted
in favour of building a Lake
Huron pipeline on Dec. 15.
