Nesbitt visits power skating to help fill program back up By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor With only two-thirds of the regular enrolment for Seaforth's power skating program this year, figure skating president Deb Ward asked Derek Nesbitt, who's in his third year playing university hockey for Ferris State University, to visit the class during his Christmas visit home in Seaforth. "Derek is bringing his skills from a higher level of hockey," . said Ward at Monday night's power skating class from 5-6 p.m. Nesbitt, who was teaching drills in fast footwork and puck handling, said he's a big supporter of power skating. "Skating is the biggest fundamental of hockey - if you can't skate, you can't play," he said. "And, while you're doing power skating, use a puck because hockey players have to be able to move the puck while they skate." Nesbitt said he spends eight hours a week just on his skating skills while training with his university hockey team. "You handle a puck better and faster if you do it every day. All the oldtimers like Gretzky talk about fundamentals all the time. It's all about repetitiveness - the more you do it, the better you get," he said. Ward said numbers of participants in Seaforth's power skating program are down by about 10 skaters this year and the class will be accepting more students in January even though half seasons are not normally encouraged. "We're hoping to fill the program back up," she said. Power skating instructor and Seaforth mites coach Mike Kelly said he believes power skating compliments minor hockey and wishes the minor hockey association and the figure skating club could work together to build skating skills. "I only have one hour a week to coach a minor hockey team and that's not enough. I can't teach skating along with warm-ups, puck drills and plays in only one hour," he said. "In an ideal world, there would be one hour just of skating for each hockey player a week. You can see the difference between the kids who go to power skating and those who don't out on the ice. Practice makes perfect," he said. Ward said power skating is a mandatory program for minor hockey in Stratford, where the younger players have strong skating skills. "We're working on that here. We need stronger skaters," she said. McElwain Hockey School staff, local talents to play at Wes Vick benefit While most of the players at the Wes Vick benefit hockey game Saturday have been confirmed, organizers Graham and Derek Nesbitt are still trying to confirm a handful of players. "We're still waiting for a couple of players to get back to us. We're hoping for a big crowd Saturday night," said Derek Monday.
