111 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, DECEMBER 10, 2003 News Firefighters narticinate in school bus extrication course By Clint Haggart Clutton News -Record If, on the odd chance, that a school bus in Huron County had an severe accident, fire departments are equipped to save any occupants. About 60 Huron County firefighters from all departments participated in a recent three-day school bus extrication course at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School. "School buses are a very safe way of transporting children but, if something were to happen, Huron County fire departments are better equipped," said outgoing Central Huron Fire Area Chief Tex Van Riesen. Firefighters, including representatives from all three fire departments in Huron East, spent from 6-9 p.m., Friday, in St. Anne's cafeteria, learning the make- up of school buses and how they're constructed, said Van Riesen, adding basic school bus extraction procedures were taught. "It was a very thorough session,." he said. All day Saturday and until noon Sunday, firefighters were taught extrication procedures on two buses provided for the course. In -coming Deputy Chief Dave Renner said firefighters learned how to make entrances and exits into the buses in different circumstances, noting one bus was tipped on its side for Sunday's practical lesson. If front and back exits were blocked, Renner said firefighters were shown how to cut into a bus through the roof. Commenting on the safety of a school bus, Renner said they are very well constricted. "It was very difficult to take apart," he said. Renner said they were told there has never been a case in which a school bus has landed to rest upside down because of the shape of the roof. He added a school bus can also withstand four times its own weight. Two firefighters from the Niagara Region taught the school bus extraction course. Dennis , Harris, transportation manager for the Avon Maitland District School Board, said the course was a worthwhile experience for firefighters and of interest to him. CBC Radio will be presenting A Christmas Carol in Brussels By Sara Campbell Expositor Staff CBC Radio will be bringing Christmas to Brussels next Thursday in the form of Charles Dickens. The St. John's Anglican Church in Brussels and CBC Radio will present a reading of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol on Dec. 11 at 7. p.m., at the church, on the corner of Turnberry Street and McCutcheon Drive. "It's such a pleasure to be hosting this event and tickets sales are going fast. It's just going to be a wonderful evening," said Rev. Tom Wilson, of St. John's Church. Wilson said the dramatic and musical reading will be lead by Judy Maddren, host of CBC Radio's morning news World Report and founder of the event. "A few years after Charles Dickens wrote the original story, he shortened it so he could present it as an evening's entertainment and that is the same text that will be used for our evening's presentation," said Wilson. Maddren and her family had the opportunity to perform the first public reading of A Christmas Carol in December 1990 to benefit a Women's Shelter. From that one successful night, the event has grown dramatically and is now presented by CBC Radio, in conjunction with local partners, in more than 100 communities across Canada and the United States. "Last year one of our parishioners said they heard the presentation on the radio and wondered if we could bring it here. We finally learned that the event would come to Brussels this past September," said Wilson. He added that the event in Brussels will not be broadcast live on the radio but the aired event will take place in Toronto on Christmas eve between 4 -6 p.m. He said the nine month application process gave him time to prepare and organize readers. Other special readers for this performance include: Carol Mitchell, MPP of Huron -Bruce; Paul Steckle, MP of Huron -Bruce; Kelly McIntosh, actor, playwright and director at the Blyth Festival; John Spencer, newly -retired Anglican Archdeacon of Huron and Perth. "All the proceeds from the event will benefit local charities similar in nature to those Charles Dickens himself promoted - children, literacy, less fortunate families, education and health care," said Wilson. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Brussels Public Library; Brussels Kids Comer, a long summer program for children aged 5 - 14; and the St. John's Food Cupboard, a small community-based initiative to help those in need in the Brussels area. Wilson said there will also be a community choir to lead the audience in singing of carols during the performance. He added that a time of fellowship will follow the performance in the church hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, aged 10 - 14, and can be reserved by calling the church 887-9273. There will be limited tickets available at the door. p Up oliva OPPI fl ,aly Electronics and Gadgets Holiday Vacation Getaways Fashions For The Family Gift Baskets For Him & Her Toys for Tots Purrrrrfect Pet Gifts Best Selling Book Bargains Stocking Stuffer Ideas Jewelry For Your Loved One Holiday Party Trays & Treats Home Furnishings Holiday Movie & Video Releases YOU'LL FIND IT ALL IN SEAFORTHIII
