Ted Nelson Interim Minister Sunday, November 30 Communion Service 11:15 am Opinion Donations to charities can give lasting help to children around world From Pogo 4 parade passes and the speeches are over. The poor have no champions in the corridors of power be they business or political so must be satisfied with bits and pieces. We may not put children in factories to work as slaves, turn them into prostitutes as young as eight years old, or force them into child soldiers experiencing the brutality and carnage of civil wars. But, I am no longer certain whether that is a question of morality or lack of opportunity. As we enter the annual orgy of feasting and shopping to excess, cynically manipulated by unseen marketing people, we might better choose to give the gift of life and hope to those whose lives are threatened and have no hope. In the name of our children, grandchildren, family members or friends, give a membership in Amnesty International and use the monthly material for the whole family to learn of another world and, just perhaps, begin to teach our children a way of life superior to blatant consumerism. Now that would be a gift lasting beyond January and for only $35. If Amnesty is not your choice, there is Free the Children started by a Canadian teenager or World Vision Canada. For Canadian children, there is Covenant House helping street children in Toronto. We can make a difference; the choice is ours. Sawmill Road parade prepares for fourth year Residents of Sawmill Road are in the spirit of the season as they prepare to bring Christmas to the country for the fourth time. The Sawmill Road Farm Machinery Christmas parade will be held on Dec. 6, on Sawmill Road, east of Seaforth on Hwy. 12, between Winthrop and Walton. "The Christmas lights really show up at night in the country. It's a great thing to see," said Gord Pryce, co-organizer of the parade. Pryce said the idea for the Sawmill Road Farm Machinery Christmas parade came after visiting a similar parade in Rockton with two other couples. "On the way home we thought, why don't we do it. It's a good reason to get to know our neighbours. We don't get to see them all year," said Pryce. Pryce said Sawmill Road residents are all involved with the parade by organizing and entering floats. He added that area farm machinery businesses have also taken part in the parade with floats. The hour and a half parade includes nearly 20 floats of tractors, combines, plows, wagons and corn planters. "Any farmers wanting to come out that night and participate in the event can. We never turn anyone down," said Pryce. "Most farmers are coming right out of the field, strapping on some lights and into the parade." The parade will depart from the Pryce farm at 5:30 p.m., and will travel east on Sawmill Road, north on Beechwood Line, west on Hullett-McKillop Road, south on Aensall Road tuming east on Sawmill Road and returning to the farm. Spectators can view the parade from laneways and road corners. Anyone who would like to participate in the parade can contact Pryce at 527-0917.
