A Seaforth resident has
returned home with a gold
medal after representing
Canada in Australia.
Larry Lowes returned
home last week after
participating in the Pride of
Canada Men's Masters
Fastball team at the ninth
annual Healthpact Australian
Master's Games, from Oct.
31 to Nov. 9, in Canberra,
Australia, south of Sydney.
"We were very proud, to
represent Canada and to
bring home the gold. It was a
honour," Lowes said.
The Pride of Canada team
finished second in the round
robin, 8-2, putting them in
the gold medal game against
the . defending world
champion Sydney Storm and
defeated them 3-0.
In May, Lowes said he was
contacted about joining the
Pride of Canada team to go
to the Australian Master's
Games by Rick Boyd, of
Kitchener, who coached the
Southwestern Ontario
baseball team and knew him
from umpiring and pitching.
"It took a week for me to
decide — talk to my family,
work and plan finances," he
said.
He added that the team had
to raise some money for the
forward to going again," he
said.
Lowes said the players are
invited back for the next
games in 2005, not only to
come back as a team
representing Canada but to
play on any other team. He
added that Austrian teams
had players from New
Zealand and Canada play for
them as well.
He said he may go back to
Australia for the next games
in 2005 or for the following
games as a way to celebrate
his 50th birthday and end his
life-long baseball career.
