Seaforth girls playing hockey
on teams outside of town
By Sara Campbell
Expositor Staff
With an active girls'
hockey division last year,
area coaches are questioning
why Seaforth has no girls
hockey teams this year.
"We thought we would
have the interest as we did
last year but we don't know
what happened," said Kevin
Williamson, Seaforth minor
hockey coach.
Last year, Seaforth had a
Peewee and Midget girls
team. This year, Seaforth
girls who do want to play
hockey are having to travel
to Brussels, Goderich or
Mitchell to join a team.
"The Midget team
graduated and moved on but
we had a full Peewee team
last year as well," said
Williamson.
"There was not enough
registered in any of the
levels and we had opened it
up to all levels. We need at
least 12 kids on a team."
Williamson said there are
Seaforth girls playing on the
Atom, Novice, Tyke and
house league teams.
"We can still offer them a
team to play on but we just
can't offer them a
competitive team without
enough people," he said.
"We will offer a
competitive team next year
but with arena costs and ice
rates, we can't operate a
team if we don't have
enough players."
Kevin Feltz, Mitchell
novice girls' hockey coach,
said there is one Seaforth
girl on the Novice team,
four on the Peewee team and '
two on the Bantam team in
Mitchell.
"We would have enough
players without the Seaforth
kids but we're still happy to
have them on our team and
we'll always welcome
more," he said.
Feltz said he finds it hard
to believe there are no girls'
teams in Seaforth as
Mitchell's Novice and
Peewee teams could have
formed two teams each with
the number of players who
came out. Mitchell has a
girls team in every division
plus two Bantam teams.
"We're glad to have them
with us and we are at least
giving them a place to play,"
said Darryl Seigner,
Mitchell Bantam girls
coach.
Brianne Hulley and Sarah
Johnston, from Seaforth,
both joined the Mitchell
Bantam girls team this year.
"Both of our Seaforth girls
our real assets to the team,"
Seigner said, adding that
Hulley was named the
team's MVP at last week's
game.
Seigner said the Mitchell
team will sometimes
practise in Seaforth and is in
the same league as Seaforth
as last year. So Seaforth
players have no further
distance to travel then they
did in previous years.

He said that if Seaforth
had enough girls to make a
team last year, there should
have been enough players to
form a team this year.
"I like playing for
Mitchell and I have a lot of
friends here so I don't know
whether I could go back to
Seaforth if a team started
again. We would be in
competition," said Hulley.
However, Johnston said
that as much as she enjoys
playing for the Mitchell
team, she would play for
Seaforth if a team started
again.
"I do like .to play in
Mitchell but I miss the
hometown games," she said.
