Author, engineer visits with St. James students
By Sara Campbell

Whether it's making a mini
spy camera or a homemade
doorbell, Amy Pinchuk is
helping to tum young children
into engineers.
The author, engineer and
mother visited with St. James
School's Gcade 5 class at the
Seaforth Public Library on
Nov. 7, as part of Canadian
Children's Author Week
through the Canadian Art
Council.
"I've always been involved
with science, ever since I was
a kid, and now as a engineer I
want to teach everyone else
what I know," said Pinchuk,
of Montreal.
Pinchuk is the author of
Make Cool Gadgets for Your
Room, Make Amazing Toy
and Game Gadgets and The
Best Book of Bikes, a
children's history book of the
bicycle.
Pinchuk has a PhD in
engineering, runs her own
consulting firm and is
involved with the European
Space Agency, Canadian
Navy and the Natural Sciences
Research Council. She is also
a professor of engineering at
McGill University and has
been nominated for a major
2003 engineering award for
initiating activities for children
at engineering conferences.
She was recognized in 2001
for her book Make Cool
Gadgets for Your Room,
shortlisted for the Canadian
Science Writers'
Association's Science in
Society Book Award.
She has lead children's
workshops in international
engineering ,conferences.
These workshops are designed
to motivate, inspire and teach
young engineers, age 5 and up
or Grade 4 to 12.
"This age group (Grade 5
students) are most interested
in science and gadgets. They
are eager to learn and have big
imaginations for ideas of their
own gadgets," she said.
Pinchuk said three years
ago she was approached by a
publisher of Popular
Mechanics for Kids with the
idea of making a book.
"As an engineer, I have to
put my ideas and steps down
in writing. But then I had to
make them easier for children
to understand and find
gadgets that would apply to
Popular Mechanics," she said.
She showed the students a
mini, workable spy camera
she made from a pie plate
cardboard, lots of tape and a
roll of 35 mm cartridge film.
Pinchuk said she wrote
Make Cool Gadgets for Your
Room and Make Amazing Toy
and Game Gadgets at the
same time.

Bieber and Rachel Askett how to make a homemade doorbell.
She said it took her a year to
create the ideas for the books
and used her four children to
test and rate the gadgets she
made. She added that it took
another year to write the
books including editing and
illustrating.
"When I was in Grade 5,
the last thing I would have
thought of being was a writer
because I wasn't good at
English or spelling," she said.
"I had to be able to
communicate what I enjoyed
doing and I worked with
editors to make that possible."
Pinchuk said her books are
filled with illustrations, facts
easy -to -follow steps as well
as pictures that interest her,
such as ones of a lightning
storm.
"Pictures that make me say
wow, I want others to see too.
So I put them in my books
and often things I make for
my books go into my
engineering," she said.
The Grade 5 class had the
opportunity to make a
doorbell by using elastic
bands, clothespins, metal
paper clips, wire, tape, a mini
buzzer and a mini light bulb.
Pinchuk said she has no
plans to write any new books
now as she is waiting to see
how well her other books sell
first.
"Right now, I'm testing my
own books but I am creating
some new ideas for gadgets
and testing them too," she
said.
